Job description

The Role

Inspira is looking for an Editor, Digital Content to establish the quality bar for everything we publish. This is a senior individual contributor role for someone who can catch a misplaced modifier and a misleading heading structure in the same read-through, who edits with the authority to push back on subject-matter experts, and who understands how content actually gets found, read, and cited - by people and by AI systems alike.

You'll work directly with coaches, subject-matter experts, and the content team to take drafts from rough to publish-ready across our blog, guides, and marketing content spanning medical, legal, business, and college admissions. You'll be equally comfortable tightening a sentence and explaining why it needed tightening, so the writers you work with get better every time you touch their work.

This role also sits at the center of how Inspira thinks about content quality as a discipline - from house style to editorial workflow to how we prepare content for an AI-driven search landscape.

This is an in-person role that requires 5 days a week attendance in our NYC office (Gramercy)

What You'll DoEdit for quality, at the sentence and structure level
  • Catch spelling, grammar, factual, and formatting errors before anything ships
  • Rewrite passive constructions into active voice; push plain language over jargon
  • Cut words that don't add meaning; tighten bloated sentences
  • Verify heading hierarchy (H1 H2 H3) is logical and accurate
  • Trace claims, stats, and quotes back to primary sources; flag anything unverified
  • Define proper nouns and terms on first mention within each section, not just once at the top
Own and apply the style guide
  • Apply Inspira's house style consistently - punctuation, capitalization, formatting, tone
  • Flag deviations rather than silently fixing them, so writers internalize the rules
  • Evolve the guide as our content and audience grow, building buy-in rather than dictating
Edit for how content is found and used - by readers and by AI
  • Match content format to search intent (listicle for transactional, guide for informational)
  • Ensure sections lead with the point in the first sentence or two, rather than burying it
  • Break content into self-contained chunks that each answer one question clearly, so they can be cited in isolation by a skimming reader or a summarizing LLM
  • Structure key claims as clear subject-predicate-object statements, easy for readers and retrieval systems alike
  • Spot phrasing that reads like it was written for a crawler instead of a person, and fix it
  • Check that link text is specific and descriptive, never generic filler like "click here"
Raise the bar on originality and expertise
  • Evaluate whether a piece adds real value - original data, an expert quote, first-hand experience - versus restating what's already out there
  • Assess whether content demonstrates real expertise through sourcing, credentials, and depth, not just polish
  • Know the difference between what AI can generate on its own and what requires a human's lived experience or judgment - and push writers toward the latter
Build the systems behind great content
  • Design and document repeatable editorial workflows - briefs, review stages, approval gates - so quality doesn't depend on any one person
  • Give writers specific, actionable feedback that explains the principle behind each change, not just the fix
  • Regularly audit top-performing content and ask: why would someone choose this over everything else on the topic?
  • Understand where each piece fits within Inspira's broader content strategy
Who You AreRequired
  • 5+ years of professional editing experience - digital publishing, content marketing, or similar - with before/after samples you can walk us through
  • Excellent command of grammar, structure, and style, paired with the judgment to know when a rule should flex
  • Experience owning or meaningfully shaping a house style guide
  • A track record of feedback that makes a writer's next draft better, not just the current one
  • Genuine curiosity about how AI and AI-driven search are changing content structure and discovery, with practical experience adapting to it
  • Comfort working with subject-matter experts and non-professional writers, including pushing back diplomatically but firmly
  • Strong organizational skills managing editorial workflow across multiple pieces and stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, deadline-driven startup environment
Preferred
  • Experience editing for a competitive, high-stakes audience (admissions, higher ed, professional services, or similar)
  • Familiarity with SEO fundamentals - intent matching, natural anchor text, avoiding over-optimization
  • Experience building or documenting editorial processes from scratch
  • Background in content strategy, not just line editing
Why you'll love Inspira
  • Amazing people with a great vision and values
  • Mission-driven team culture focused on student success
  • Your work directly impacts the lives and careers of students across the globe
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance, base plans 100% employer paid
  • Pre-tax benefits (HSA, FSA, DCFSA, Commuter)
  • Flexible paid time off (PTO) and paid holidays
  • 401(k) with company match

The total compensation for this role is $85,000 - 100,000. Actual salary is dependent upon several factors, including the applicant's experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity among our team and geographic location. The pay ratio between base pay and target incentive will be finalized at the offer. The pay range is subject to the discretion of the Company.
