INTERA Incorporated is seeking a detail-oriented Technical Editor to support our Richland, Washington, team and its work at the U.S. Department of Energy's Hanford Site. In this role, you will review technical deliverable documents and provide document processing services in support of our Hanford prime contract partners, helping ensure documents are accurate, consistent, and delivered to the highest quality standards. As part of our growing and collaborative team of Technical Editors, you will have the opportunity to contribute to process improvements, enhance standardization, and help driver greater efficiency throughout the document development and review lifecycle.

Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of this position is to provide technical editing services in support of INTERA’s environmental services under the direction of a Document Production Manager. The Technical Editor will review and provide final formatting of all documents and attachments (Tables, Figures, and Appendices) and compilation of final documents. The Technical Editor will assist project managers and other technical staff to address last-minute revisions and issues related to the document and client feedback. Often there are multiple project needs for different project managers, so being responsive and able to manage one’s own workflow is essential.

  • Provide technical editing and formatting documents such as environmental reports, model documentation, letters, technical memos, presentation materials, etc.
  • Use advanced MS Word features, such as linked captions and cross-references, custom tables of content, and style settings
  • Flag questionable content and unclear phrases; work with the preparers over multiple iterations of a draft when needed
  • Format tables, figures, and appendices according to different client standards
  • Use technical editing QA forms to document that references and terms lists are correct and complete. Assist with developing missing references and terms entries
  • Compile final PDFs and proofread submissions to ensure the highest standard of accuracy and polish
  • Update entries in various document tracking tables and databases; assist with setting up or tracking paperwork or forms associated with deliverables

Required Qualifications

  • High-level proficiency in English grammar and mechanics
  • High-level proficiency in Microsoft Word, including advanced formatting of different document sections, using and troubleshooting cross-references, adding or fixing tables of contents and header/footer issues
  • Moderate proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, or other Microsoft products/tools
  • Moderate proficiency in Adobe Acrobat, to include combining multiple documents, fixing or adding bookmarks, OCR, checking document accessibility/compliance
  • Maintaining a strong “customer service” mindset when working with technical staff and project managers. This role provides a wide range of services and may require proactive outreach and self-promotion to other offices and remote employees to ensure their awareness of capabilities and availability.
  • Ability to manage competing deadlines while clearly and professionally communicating progress. The technical editor frequently supports projects in their final stages, often under tight delivery timelines, and providing timely and consistent communication is essential to this role.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in a related field
  • An interest or background in STEM concepts and topics
  • Experience working with remote co-workers and using Microsoft Teams or other video conferencing tools when communicating with coworkers
  • Previous experience as a technical editor
  • Prior experience working in technical publication editing and document processing for Hanford Site prime or subcontractors, including knowledge of relevant style guides, information clearance procedures, and technical publication workflows, is highly preferred
