Application Engineering Specialist

Armstrong Fluid Technology

Toronto, ON

Full-time

Re-posted 6 days ago

Job description

The Regional Sales Enablement Center (RSEC) at Armstrong Fluid Technology operates as a strategic nexus of engineering expertise and commercial strategy. The center's purpose is not to function as a direct sales force, but rather as a high-leverage engineering and technical support structure. This structure empowers the frontline sales teams and external sales partners by equipping them with the deep technical analysis, system design, and value articulation necessary to win complex, high-value projects.

The RSEC is the critical link aligning Armstrong's world-class engineering capabilities with its global sales strategies. Its mission is to ensure that every customer proposal is underpinned by the best possible technical solution-one that is optimized, energy-efficient, and delivers on Armstrong's core brand promise of sustainability, lowest lifecycle cost, and industry-leading performance.

Within this framework, the Application Engineering Specialist (AES) serves as the "technical engine" of the enablement process. This role is responsible for analyzing sophisticated customer requirements, interpreting complex mechanical plans, designing optimized hydronic systems, and articulating the financial and engineering benefits of Armstrong's solutions to technically sophisticated audiences, including consulting engineers, contractors, and facility end-users.

Key Accountabilities

Application Engineering & Technical Design Support

  • Review HVAC design drawings, mechanical plans, and specifications to develop advanced hydronic system solutions using Armstrong's portfolio.
  • Interpret and analyze control schematics, plumbing layouts, and P&ID diagrams to ensure optimal product selection and system integration.
  • Support engineering firms and rep partners with system optimization recommendations (e.g., primary-secondary, variable flow, decoupled systems).
  • Contribute technical insight on pump control strategies, delta-T optimization, sensor placement, and operating cost improvement.
  • Use Armstrong's selection tools (e.g., ADEPT) to generate technically sound proposals, energy models, and quotations.
  • Ensure accurate configuration and documentation of proposed systems based on customer specifications and field conditions.

Field Support & Sales Enablement

  • Participate in site walk-throughs, customer meetings, and design reviews alongside Armstrong sales personnel.
  • Assist in delivering technical presentations to communicate Armstrong's value proposition.

Technical Support & Process Integration

  • Assist the Territory Lead in reviewing CRM opportunities, validating sizing, controls compatibility, and application viability.
  • Collaborate with Product Management and Engineering when custom application reviews are needed

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Contribution

  • Participate in RSEC team discussions and alignment meetings across the Americas.
  • Support special technical projects as assigned by management.
  • Maintain a proactive mindset, striving for increased business agility, faster response times, and enhanced service quality.
  • Collaborate on the creation and refinement of internal technical materials, FAQs, and best-practice guides.

What We're Looking For

Education and Experience

  • College diploma or university degree in Mechanical Engineering, HVAC Technology, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in manufacturing or mechanical systems design, with a strong focus on HVAC in Hydronics and Plumbing applications.
  • Minimum of 1 year experience in a customer-oriented technical role, such as internal sales engineering, technical field service, or application support.
  • Experience interpreting mechanical drawings, control schematics, and hydronic system documentation is essential.

Technical Skills

  • Strong ability to read and analyze control schematics, plumbing risers, and hydronic layouts.
  • Solid understanding of District Energy application, central plant systems, including variable-speed pumping, thermal storage, heat exchangers, and control loops.
  • Familiarity with HVAC energy strategies (i.e., ASHRAE 36) such as reset schedules, delta-T management, and decoupling techniques.
  • Proficient in using selection software tools and Microsoft Office; CRM and quoting platforms experience is a plus.

Soft Skills

  • Technically articulate with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and project follow-through.
  • Able to confidently support external conversations with engineers and contractors and adapt communication style based on audience.
