What is a desktop support consultant?

Desktop Support Consultants are IT professionals who provide technical assistance and support for computer systems, hardware, and software within an organization. Their main role is to troubleshoot issues, resolve technical problems, install or upgrade software, and ensure users can effectively use their desktop computers and related technology. They may also assist with network connectivity, system security, and user training. Typically, they work closely with other IT staff and end users to maintain a productive and secure computing environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a desktop support consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Desktop Support Consultant, you need a solid understanding of computer hardware, operating systems, troubleshooting techniques, and often a relevant IT degree or certifications like CompTIA A+ or Microsoft Certified: Modern Desktop Administrator Associate. Familiarity with remote desktop tools, ticketing systems like ServiceNow, and knowledge of Active Directory are typically required. These skills are crucial for quickly resolving technical issues, minimizing downtime, and ensuring user satisfaction in a business environment.

What are some common challenges faced by desktop support consultants when supporting remote or hybrid employees?

Desktop Support Consultants often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting connectivity issues, configuring VPNs, and ensuring secure access to company resources for remote or hybrid employees. Supporting a wide range of devices and operating systems outside the office network can make diagnosing and resolving problems more complex. Desktop Support Consultant

Job Summary

We are seeking a hands-on Desktop Support Consultant to assist with a large-scale Windows 11 rollout, hardware refresh, and office relocation project. This consultant will work closely with the IT team to deploy and configure new laptops and desktops, migrate users to Windows 11, set up technology in the new office environment, and provide deskside support throughout the transition.

The ideal candidate has strong desktop support experience in a corporate or professional services environment and is comfortable working directly with end users, troubleshooting hardware and software issues, and supporting technology deployment projects in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the deployment and rollout of Windows 11 across the organization.
  • Configure, image, deploy, and replace laptops, desktops, monitors, docking stations, and related peripherals.
  • Support the migration of users from existing hardware to newly deployed equipment.
  • Transfer and validate user profiles, applications, settings, and data as required.
  • Provide hands-on deskside support before, during, and after the Windows 11 migration and hardware refresh.
  • Troubleshoot Windows 11, Microsoft 365, hardware, software, printing, connectivity, and peripheral issues.
  • Assist with technology-related activities associated with an office move, including workstation breakdown, setup, testing, and validation.
  • Set up and test computers, monitors, docking stations, phones, printers, and other workplace technology at the new office location.
  • Perform post-move floor support to quickly resolve end-user technology issues.
  • Maintain accurate inventory and asset information for deployed, replaced, and relocated equipment.
  • Coordinate with internal IT teams, vendors, and project stakeholders to ensure deployment activities are completed according to schedule.
  • Provide professional, customer-focused support to end users and communicate clearly regarding migration and deployment activities.
  • Escalate complex technical issues to the appropriate engineering or infrastructure teams when necessary.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience providing desktop, deskside, or end-user computing support in a corporate environment.
  • Hands-on experience supporting Windows 10 and Windows 11.
  • Experience with desktop/laptop deployments, hardware refreshes, migrations, or large-scale technology rollout projects.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft 365 applications, including Outlook, Teams, OneDrive, and Office applications.
  • Experience configuring and troubleshooting laptops, desktops, monitors, docking stations, printers, and other peripherals.
  • Familiarity with Active Directory, Microsoft Entra ID, Microsoft Intune, SCCM/MECM, or similar endpoint management tools.
  • Experience with imaging, software installation, user profile migration, and workstation configuration.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across hardware, software, operating systems, and basic network connectivity.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills with the ability to support users at all levels of an organization.
  • Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with project and IT support teams.
  • Ability to lift, move, unpack, and install computer equipment as required during deployment and office move activities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience supporting an office relocation or large-scale workstation deployment.
  • Experience supporting users within a law firm, financial services firm, or other professional services environment.
  • Experience providing white-glove support to executives and other senior-level users.
  • Familiarity with ServiceNow or another ITSM/ticketing platform.
  • Experience with enterprise asset management and inventory tracking.

Project Focus

This is a project-based consulting opportunity focused primarily on Windows 11 migration, hardware refresh, office move support, and post-deployment deskside support. The consultant should be comfortable working in a hands-on environment where priorities may shift based on deployment schedules and end-user needs.
