What does a design engineer manager do?

A Design Engineer Manager leads a team of design engineers in developing, testing, and refining products or systems. They oversee project timelines, coordinate with other departments, and ensure that design solutions meet technical, quality, and budget requirements. Additionally, they provide technical guidance, mentor their team, and often contribute to the hiring and training processes. Their role is crucial for bridging the gap between engineering and management, ensuring that projects are delivered efficiently and meet organizational goals.

How does a design engineer manager balance technical project responsibilities with team leadership duties?

As a Design Engineer Manager, balancing technical tasks and team leadership is essential. You are often responsible for overseeing project timelines, ensuring design quality, and addressing technical challenges, while also mentoring team members, conducting performance reviews, and fostering collaboration. Effective delegation, regular team meetings, and clear communication help manage these dual responsibilities. Many Design Engineer Managers find success by setting aside dedicated time for both technical reviews and one-on-one sessions with their team, ensuring neither aspect is neglected.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a design engineer manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Design Engineer Manager, you need a strong background in engineering principles, project management, and leadership, often supported by a bachelor's or master's degree in engineering and relevant management experience. Familiarity with CAD software, product lifecycle management (PLM) systems, and certifications like PMP or Six Sigma are typically valuable. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and team-building skills help you motivate and guide multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure effective project execution, innovation, and the successful delivery of complex engineering solutions.

What is the difference between Design Engineer Manager vs Design Engineer?

AspectDesign Engineer ManagerDesign Engineer

Work EnvironmentOversees teams, manages projects, strategic planningDesigns products, develops prototypes, technical tasks
Employer & Industry UsageEngineering firms, manufacturing, aerospace, automotiveSame industries, focused on technical design work

The main difference is that a Design Engineer Manager leads teams and manages projects, while a Design Engineer focuses on technical design and development tasks. The manager role involves leadership and strategic planning, whereas the engineer role emphasizes hands-on design work.

What does a design engineer manager get paid?

A design engineer manager's salary typically ranges from $90,000 to $150,000 annually, depending on experience, industry, and location. They often oversee engineering teams, coordinate design projects, and require strong technical skills and leadership abilities.

Which design engineer manager has the highest salary?

Design engineering managers with extensive experience, advanced degrees, and certifications such as PMP or Six Sigma tend to have the highest salaries. Salaries also vary based on industry, company size, and geographic location, with those in technology and aerospace sectors often earning the most. Senior managers overseeing large teams or complex projects typically command higher compensation.

Job description

Department Focus

The Original Equipment (OE) group supports business needs and continuous improvement efforts through proper technical product and engineering design support as well as appropriate development of employees and management.  The OE group is a business unit that encompasses quoting, engineering, quality, project management, production planning and procurement.

Job Description and Duties:
Due to Federal Contract requirements, US Citizenship is required for this position.
Principle Duties:

Provides a high level of non-supervisory engineering work on broad project assignments though all phases of new unit design, development, manufacture, test, and commissioning.  Takes ownership of and drives assignments, with limited guidance or intervention required to progress work. Works with Lead Engineers and Project managers to understand and prioritize assigned work. Provides technical expertise and work direction to colleagues who are working together on assigned project tasks.

Principal duties performed in collaboration with the Lead Unit Design Engineer or Engineering Manager consist of, but are not limited to:

  • Translate contract design specifications and code requirements into the requisite product design of components, subassemblies, and assemblies. Assist Lead Unit Design Engineer in providing technical oversight to ensure Code and contract requirements are met.
  • Engaged as primary engineering analyst utilizing Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software to support the needs of the OE group. The analyses may include but are not limited to stress/structural analyses, frequency analyses, seismic analysis, and thermal analyses.
  • Produce reports to summarize and present results of calculations and FEA simulations. Provide recommendations to optimize or improve designs based on results of simulations.
  • Support all aspects of unit design as assigned by the Lead Unit Design Engineer or Engineering Manager, including, but not limited to, initial planning, concepting, mechanical design, material selection, calculations, and test plan creation. Collaborate with the Lead Unit Design Engineer and Engineering Manager to recommend appropriate design strategy for conceptual and product development. Identify pros, cons, and risks of design choices, both during and downstream from the design phase.
  • Author, check, and approve most types of contract documents and drawings at the senior level as needed to support OE contracts. These may include design calculations, analysis, drawings, test reports, design code required items, quality program documents, bills of material, and more.
  • Execute against established schedules, producing progress reports as required. Identify tasks and priorities and assist the Lead Unit Design Engineer with setting hours estimates and adhering to targets/deadlines.
  • Interface with customers and vendors as required in the performance of design activities.
  • Performs self-check of completed work, develops self-confidence, mentors, counsels and provides guidance to peers and team as directed by the Lead Unit Design Engineer and Engineering Manager. Assists Lead Unit Design Engineer and Engineering Manager in identifying training courses for self and others to develop required skills.
  • Promotes in-house mechanical design excellence by suggesting design and analysis tools, techniques and process improvements. Participates in or leads development projects related to the expansion and improvement of company standards, processes, and procedures.

Engineers in this role will be expected to apply engineering fundamentals and use their broad working knowledge of mechanical design, stress calculations, analyses, and manufacturing to solve varying and complex problems. Some potentially relevant areas of knowledge and experience include structural design and vibration, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, machine design and assembly, rotordynamics, root cause analysis, and material selection. Some contracts require work that is first-of-its kind for the company, with no prior references.

Secondary Duties
