Deputy Editors are senior editorial professionals who assist the Editor-in-Chief or Managing Editor in overseeing the editorial operations of a publication, such as a magazine, newspaper, or digital media outlet. They help manage the editorial team, assign stories, review content, and ensure that publication standards and deadlines are met. Deputy Editors often step in to make decisions when the Editor-in-Chief is unavailable and may also contribute to strategic planning and content development.

How does a deputy editor typically collaborate with writers and other editorial staff to ensure content quality and consistency?

Deputy Editors play a key role in guiding writers and coordinating with other editorial team members to maintain high-quality, consistent content. They frequently review submissions, provide feedback, and work closely with writers to refine articles according to the publication's standards and voice. Additionally, Deputy Editors often coordinate with copy editors, fact-checkers, and designers to ensure that each piece meets editorial guidelines and is ready for publication. This collaborative process helps foster a cohesive team environment and ensures that all content aligns with the publication's goals.

Job description

Stand Together is a philanthropic community that helps America’s boldest changemakers tackle the root causes of our country’s biggest problems, from education to the economy, broken communities, and toxic division, among dozens of other pressing issues. We provide our partners with access to resources including funding, thought leadership, a network of peers, and a playbook for applying proven principles to transform lives and society.

As a Deputy Editor, you will help lead Development Communications for our grassroots brands, including Americans for Prosperity, The LIBRE Initiative, Concerned Veterans for America, and related efforts.

This role will oversee Development Communications, including the editorial calendar, workflows, review cycles, deadlines, approvals, and handoffs. The Deputy Editor will directly manage writers focused on Development Communications, ensuring work is strategically planned, clearly assigned, well edited, and delivered with accuracy, consistency, and quality.

This team’s portfolio includes donor-facing emails, proposals, pitch decks, direct mail packages, polling memos, stewardship updates, and related materials. The Deputy Editor will help ensure these products translate policy, strategy, campaign context, and impact into compelling content for donor audiences.

The ideal candidate is a strong editor, people manager, and editorial operator who can balance strategy with execution. This person will collaborate across Marketing, Fundraising Strategy, policy, legal/compliance, creative, and grassroots partner teams to move complex projects from intake to final review. Over time, this role should grow into greater ownership of final editorial review and approval readiness.

This role requires electoral campaign experience, strong editorial judgment, direct people-management experience, comfort with complex workflows, familiarity with AI tools, and the ability to shape high-quality donor-facing content. The Deputy Editor should also be willing to write, revise, and develop high-priority content directly when needed.

How You Will Contribute
  • Directly manage a team of writers focused on Development Communications, creating a culture of editorial excellence, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

  • Lead editorial workflow and process improvements across intake, prioritization, assignments, review cycles, approvals, deadlines, and handoffs.

  • Edit, shape, and occasionally write donor-facing content, including donor emails, proposals, pitch decks, direct mail packages, polling memos, stewardship updates, and related materials.

  • Own the content calendar for grassroots partners and initiatives, ensuring donor-facing content is planned, prioritized, assigned, and delivered on deadline.

  • Collaborate with Marketing, Fundraising Strategy, Policy, Legal/Compliance, Creative, and Grassroots teams to ensure content is accurate, strategically aligned, and polished.

What You Will Bring
  • 3+ years of electoral campaign experience, with the judgment to understand campaign strategy and political dynamics, and translate that into compelling donor-facing content.
  • 7+ years of professional experience in editing, writing, content strategy, communications, or publishing, including direct people-management experience.

  • Strong editorial judgment, with the ability to improve content structure, clarity, tone, message discipline, accuracy, and audience relevance.

  • Experience managing complex editorial calendars, workflows, review processes, and cross-functional content projects.

  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with the ability to translate policy, strategy, polling, and organizational priorities into compelling donor-facing content.

  • Strong stakeholder-management skills, comfort using performance and workflow insights to improve execution, and alignment with Stand Together’s values of humility, integrity, entrepreneurialism, and principled problem-solving.

  • Enthusiasm to contribute to Stand Together's vision and principled approach to solving problems, and a commitment to stewarding our culture, which champions values including transformation and innovation, entrepreneurialism, humility, and respect.

What We Offer
  • Competitive benefits: Enjoy a 6% 401(k) match with immediate vesting, flexible time off, comprehensive health and dental plans, plus wellness and mental health support through Peloton and Talkspace.

  • A meaningful career: Join a passionate community of over 1,300 employees dedicated to improving lives and driving innovative solutions to complex social challenges.

  • Commitment to growth: Thrive in a non-hierarchical environment that empowers employees to discover, develop and apply their unique talents.

  • Competitive compensation: Our approach rewards the value you create through competitive salaries and bonus opportunities, allowing you to share in the success you help drive.

For this role, the anticipated base salary range is $120,000–$140,000 per year. This role may also be eligible for additional bonus compensation designed to align total compensation with an employee’s overall contribution to the organization.

Our Principles-Based Management™ (PBM) compensation philosophy is grounded in an individualized approach that rewards the long-term value each person creates for the organization. Compensation decisions are informed by a variety of factors, including relevant experience, capabilities, demonstrated skills, role responsibilities, and expected contribution. Consistent with this approach, base salary may vary within or outside of the anticipated range based on these considerations.

Our Values: Working for an organization within the Stand Together philanthropic community is different from many other places. The culture is deeply rooted in Principle Based Management® (PBM®), a framework guided by the principles that drive human progress, such as dignity, openness, and bottom-up empowerment. PBM® empowers employees to be entrepreneurial, to innovate, and to continually drive transformation.

We believe diversity fuels creativity, broadens knowledge, and helps drive success.  That is why we’re proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer and strive to treat all employees and applicants with honesty, dignity, and respect.
