Job description

City Cast DC is seeking an experienced, driven editor to edit and support a growing team of local reporters across multiple beats and platforms. Reporting to the Managing Editor, this editor will serve as a deputy, helping to manage day-to-day editing and coverage strategy. 

The ideal candidate is news-driven, passionate about driving distinct coverage, and adept at understanding how stories can be translated across articles, newsletters, podcasts and social. They are also a strong communicator and manager who believes in front-end editing, giving constructive feedback, and helping reporters grow their skills. 

The editor will be working closely with the entire team to expand City Cast DC's newsroom, so an enthusiasm for building from the ground up is a must.

What You'll Do
  • Edit a team of reporters, providing clear guidance, feedback, and support on a daily basis
  • Review, refine, and approve story pitches, helping reporters sharpen angles, identify gaps, and prioritize coverage
  • Edit newsletters and other written reporting for clarity, structure, voice, and accuracy, ensuring work meets City Cast DC's editorial standards.
  • Collaborate with the podcast and social teams to ensure reported stories translate cleanly across platforms
  • Use audience metrics and reader feedback to inform coverage decisions and sharpen our approach over time
  • Fact-check reporting and oversee accuracy and ensure fairness throughout the editing process.
  • Help manage editorial workflows, deadlines, and publishing schedules to keep the newsroom running smoothly.
  • Provide coaching and mentorship to help reporters grow as writers, reporters, and public-facing journalists.
What You Bring 
  • 2-3+ years editing and managing reporters in a local or regional news environment.
  • Strong editorial judgment and a deep understanding of how to shape and elevate reported stories.
  • A keen eye for detail and a commitment to accuracy, fairness, and clear fact-checking processes.
  • Experience working in fast-paced, deadline-driven newsrooms.
  • Excellent communication and people-management skills, with the ability to give constructive feedback and set clear expectations.
  • An understanding of cross-platform storytelling, including how written reporting translates to audio and social media.
  • Familiarity with audience metrics and how to apply them to editorial decision-making is a plus
  • A genuine interest in DC and its communities, along with an appreciation for the city's complexity and nuance.

Benefits

The Editor will report to the Managing Editor of City Cast DC. This position is full-time, with excellent benefits. The annual salary range is $80,000-$125,000 depending on experience. You must be local, though work will be primarily remote.
