What is a democratic campaign?

A Democratic Campaign job involves working to support Democratic candidates, policies, or initiatives during elections. Roles can vary from field organizing and communications to fundraising and data analysis. These positions often require strong organizational skills, political knowledge, and a commitment to Democratic values. Staffers collaborate on voter outreach, event planning, and campaign strategy to help secure electoral victories. Many roles are temporary and fast-paced, especially leading up to Election Day.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a democratic campaign?

To thrive in a Democratic Campaign role, you need skills in organizing, communication, data analysis, and voter outreach, often supported by experience in political science, public relations, or campaign management. Familiarity with tools like NationBuilder, NGP VAN, digital marketing platforms, and voter database systems is highly valuable. Initiative, adaptability, teamwork, and the ability to work under tight deadlines are key soft skills that set candidates apart. These competencies are crucial for executing effective campaign strategies, engaging voters, and ensuring the campaign's overall success.

What does a typical workweek look like for someone on a democratic campaign team?

A typical workweek on a Democratic Campaign team is fast-paced and can involve varied tasks, including coordinating events, reaching out to voters, drafting communications, organizing volunteers, and analyzing polling data. Team members often collaborate closely with colleagues in communications, field operations, fundraising, and digital outreach to move the campaign's objectives forward. While the hours can be long—especially as Election Day approaches—the environment is energetic and mission-driven. Campaign staff should be prepared for occasional evening and weekend work as urgent priorities arise, but this hands-on experience can provide valuable opportunities for professional advancement in politics, advocacy, or public service.

Frank Pallone Jr. is the Democratic Congressman representing New Jersey’s 6th District, which includes portions of Middlesex and Monmouth counties. A 19-term Congressman and Ranking Member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, Congressman Pallone is seeking reelection in the November general election. We are seeking motivated, politically engaged, and self-directed interns to support the campaign’s general election efforts and help ensure Congressman Pallone’s continued service in Congress.

Time Requirements

  • Internship lasts through the November 3rd election
  • (Remote) Approximately 6-10 hours of work weekly
  • (In office) Approximately 15-20 hours of work weekly
  • (Hybrid) Approximately 10-20 hours of work weekly

Weekly Schedule

  • Check in for daily assignments through Zoom or in person at 1pm.
  • Interns must commit to at least three weekly phonebanking sessions.
  • Every session lasts 2 hours, totaling a 6-hour weekly minimum.
  • Weekend door knocking throughout the district.

Functions

  • Staffing campaign events and other activities alongside elected officials and political figures.
  • Canvassing throughout the District, including knocking on doors, distributing campaign literature, and engaging with voters at community events, grocery stores, parks, and other public locations.
  • Assisting with the planning and creation of content for campaign social media, including developing graphics and other digital materials.
  • Conducting opposition research, power mapping, and gathering relevant political information to support campaign strategy and outreach efforts.
