Is 40 too late for data science?

Data interns and data science professionals can start at any age, including 40 or older. Success in data science depends on skills, such as programming, statistics, and tools like Python or R, rather than age. Many individuals transition into data roles later in their careers through self-study, online courses, and certifications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Intern, you typically need foundational knowledge in data analysis, statistics, and programming languages such as Python or R, often supported by coursework in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with data visualization tools (like Tableau or Power BI), spreadsheet software, and SQL databases is commonly expected. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication skills help interns interpret data and present findings clearly. These skills are crucial for accurately analyzing data, supporting business decisions, and contributing meaningfully to projects in a collaborative environment.

Is 23 an hour good for an internship?

For a Data Intern position, $23 an hour is above the federal minimum wage and generally considered competitive for internships in many regions, especially if the role involves data analysis, programming, or using tools like Excel or SQL. However, internship pay varies by location, industry, and company size, so it's important to compare with local standards and the internship's responsibilities.

What does a data intern do?

A data intern assists with collecting, cleaning, and analyzing data to support business decisions. They often use tools like Excel, SQL, or Python and may work under supervision to develop reports, dashboards, or data models. The role provides hands-on experience in data management and analysis within a professional environment.

What are the big 4 internships?

The Big 4 internships refer to internship programs offered by Deloitte, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), Ernst & Young (EY), and KPMG. These firms provide opportunities in areas such as audit, consulting, tax, and advisory, often targeting students pursuing degrees in accounting, finance, or related fields. Internships typically last 8-12 weeks and may lead to full-time offers for high-performing interns.

What is the difference between Data Intern vs Data Analyst?

AspectData InternData Analyst

The main difference between a Data Intern and a Data Analyst lies in experience and responsibilities. Data Interns are typically students or recent graduates gaining initial exposure, while Data Analysts are more experienced professionals responsible for analyzing data, creating reports, and supporting decision-making. Internships serve as a stepping stone toward a full Data Analyst role, which requires more skills and experience.

What types of projects and tasks can a Data Intern typically expect to work on during their internship?

As a Data Intern, you can expect to be involved in a variety of hands-on projects such as cleaning and organizing datasets, assisting with data collection, and supporting the development of reports or dashboards. You may work closely with data analysts, data scientists, or business teams to help identify trends and uncover insights from raw data. This role often includes learning to use data analysis tools like Excel, Python, or SQL, and contributing to ongoing team projects while gaining exposure to real-world data challenges. Interns are usually given guidance and mentorship, making this a great opportunity to build foundational skills and understand how data-driven decisions are made in the organization.

Job description

Hi, We're Centerfield!
Supercharged customer acquisition. Centerfield delivers outcome-based digital marketing solutions and personalized omnichannel experiences for the world's leading brands. Powered by our proprietary Dugout platform, Centerfield acquires customers at scale for leading residential service, insurance, e-commerce, and B2B brands. Centerfield's digital experiences and digital brands, such as Business.com and BroadbandNow.com, reach more than 150 million in-market shoppers annually. Centerfield is headquartered in Silicon Beach and is proud to be recognized by Built in LA as a Best Place to Work in Los Angeles.
The Opportunity...
Centerfield is looking for a curious, hands-on Data Science Intern to work alongside our Data Science team on the systems that turn millions of customer conversations into intelligence. You'll contribute directly to our call intelligence and customer data platforms - helping us extract behavioral signals from phone calls, validate predictive models, and activate that intelligence to personalize experiences for over 150 million shoppers annually. This is a builder's internship: you'll write real code, work with real data, and ship work that informs real business decisions, all with the mentorship and support of an experienced DS bench.
How You'll Contribute...
  • Trait Extraction & Analysis: Analyze call transcripts and help build and refine rules that extract behavioral and intent signals, measuring their accuracy against human-labeled benchmarks.
  • Model Validation: Support the team in validating predictive models and traits feeding into our customer data platform - quantifying how well signals correlate with conversion, retention, and customer value.
  • Data Exploration: Profile and clean high-volume data, surface patterns and quality issues, and translate findings into clear, actionable summaries for the team.
  • LLM & GenAI Experimentation: Get hands-on with modern GenAI workflows -prompting, evaluation, and lightweight RAG experiments - to help assess summary quality and reduce hallucinations in production outputs.
  • Communicate Findings: Build charts, notebooks, and short write-ups that make your analysis easy for both technical and business stakeholders to act on.

What We're Looking For...
  • Education: Currently pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, or a related quantitative field.
  • Programming: Solid foundation in Python and familiarity with core data libraries (e.g., pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn) through coursework, research, or personal projects.
  • ML & Stats Fundamentals: Working understanding of machine learning concepts and applied statistics - regression, classification, evaluation metrics, and basic experimental thinking.
  • Data Skills: Comfortable querying and manipulating data with SQL, and curious about working with large, messy, real-world datasets.
  • GenAI Curiosity: Genuine interest in LLMs and Generative AI, with some hands-on exposure (prompting, an API project, a course, or experimentation) even if not yet professional.
  • Mindset: Self-starter who communicates clearly, asks good questions, and is eager to take a problem from notebook to a result the team can use.

Bonus Points!
  • Cloud Exposure: Any experience with a major cloud platform, especially GCP (BigQuery, Vertex AI), is a plus.
  • NLP / Text Data: Prior work with natural language processing, transcripts, or unstructured text data.
  • Graph or CDP Concepts: Familiarity with graph databases (e.g., Neo4j) or customer data/identity resolution concepts.
  • Visualization: Experience building dashboards or visualizations to tell a story with data
