As of Jun 28, 2026, the average yearly pay for cyber security volunteer in the United States is $132,962.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $111,000.00 and $150,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are Cyber Security Volunteers?

Cyber Security Volunteers are individuals who offer their time and expertise, often unpaid, to help organizations or communities protect their digital systems and data from cyber threats. Their tasks can range from raising awareness about online safety, helping to detect and prevent cyber attacks, to assisting with incident response and recovery. Many cyber security volunteers work with nonprofit organizations, schools, or government initiatives, making valuable contributions to the overall safety of the digital environment. Volunteering in this field can also provide hands-on experience for those looking to start or advance a career in cyber security.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Cyber Security Volunteer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cyber Security Volunteer, you need a foundational understanding of information security principles, networking, and risk assessment, often supported by coursework or self-study in cybersecurity. Familiarity with security tools like Wireshark, basic scripting, and platforms such as Linux or SIEM is beneficial, and entry-level certifications like CompTIA Security+ can enhance credibility. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and a proactive learning attitude are essential soft skills that set volunteers apart. These capabilities are crucial for effectively supporting security initiatives, identifying vulnerabilities, and contributing to a safer digital environment within organizations.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on as a Cyber Security Volunteer?

As a Cyber Security Volunteer, you may assist with tasks such as monitoring network traffic for potential threats, helping educate staff or the public on best security practices, conducting vulnerability assessments under supervision, or supporting incident response efforts. Many organizations also involve volunteers in updating security documentation or maintaining cybersecurity tools. The specific responsibilities can vary depending on the organization's needs and your skill level, but you'll often work closely with IT professionals and other volunteers in a collaborative environment.

Is cybersecurity a dead field?

Cybersecurity is a growing and vital field with increasing demand for professionals such as cybersecurity analysts and specialists. The need for skilled workers remains high due to evolving cyber threats, making it a viable career path for those with relevant skills, certifications, and knowledge of security tools and protocols.

What Are Cyber Security Volunteer Jobs?

A cyber security volunteer helps prevent hacking and other security breaches from occurring in an organization. In this career, your responsibilities are to monitor the activity of a network to identify any unauthorized access or other suspicious activity, such as a denial-of-service threat that could shut down an entire system. Additional duties involve installing software on a computer that can automate these tasks, conducting a penetration test for prevention, and reporting a violation if it happens. Positions exist with non-profits, schools, government, and any other group that has an online presence.

What is the 80 20 rule in cyber security?

The 80/20 rule in cybersecurity suggests that approximately 80% of security issues are caused by 20% of vulnerabilities or threats. Cyber security volunteers and professionals focus on identifying and mitigating these critical vulnerabilities to improve overall security posture efficiently.

Is 40 too old for cyber security?

Cyber security volunteer roles and careers are open to individuals of all ages, including those who are 40 or older. Success in cyber security depends on skills, certifications, and experience rather than age, and many professionals transition into the field later in life. Continuous learning and staying current with tools like firewalls and intrusion detection systems are important regardless of age.

How to get in cyber security with no experience?

Cyber security volunteer roles often require foundational knowledge of networks, operating systems, and security principles. Gaining relevant skills through online courses, certifications like CompTIA Security+ or Certified Ethical Hacker, and hands-on practice with tools such as Wireshark or Kali Linux can help entry-level candidates build qualifications. Volunteering for non-profit organizations or participating in Capture The Flag (CTF) competitions can also provide practical experience to improve employability.

Job description

Summary

CyberUp is looking for enthusiastic technology professionals to help us ignite the curiosity of the youth in our community and create more informed digital citizens. You don't need to be a teacher because we provide all the lesson plans, materials, and training. You just bring your passion for technology and your commitment to inspiring the next generation.

Lesson topics include digital citizenship, media literacy, cybercrime, cyberbullying, digital footprints, and more.

Why Volunteer?

Your time and talent can spark a lifelong love of technology. By volunteering with PowerUp, you'll inspire students to think critically about the digital world, build their confidence, and empower them to make safer choices online. Every session is a chance to open new doors and show kids what's possible for their future.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Participate in-person at local schools (volunteers must be located in the St. Louis area).
  • Complete a school district-mandated background check ($25 fee).
  • Attend a virtual orientation with CyberUp, where we'll walk you through activities and share best practices.
  • Use our ready-to-go lesson plans and materials to teach cybersecurity in a fun, age-appropriate way.
  • Model professionalism and encourage positive engagement in every classroom visit.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

  • Passion for working with youth and sparking curiosity about technology and cybersecurity.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts in simple, age-appropriate terms.
  • Reliability and punctuality to ensure consistency for students and schools.
  • Positive attitude, patience, and flexibility when working in classroom environments.
  • Team player who can collaborate with teachers, CyberUp staff, and fellow volunteers.
  • Basic familiarity with technology and internet safety concepts (training will be provided).
  • Commitment to fostering a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment for all students.

Visa and work authorization notice

This is a volunteer opportunity with limited weekly hours. Most PowerUp volunteer roles do not meet the 20-hour-per-week threshold often required for unpaid or volunteer work to count toward post-completion OPT. Applicants seeking to use this opportunity for OPT, CPT, or any other immigration-related purpose must confirm eligibility with their DSO or immigration advisor before applying. CyberUp cannot guarantee visa-related eligibility or credit.

Equal Opportunity Employer

CyberUp is an Equal Opportunity employer. CyberUp complies with appropriate federal, state, and local laws and provides equal opportunities and access to education programs without regard to race, color, religion, gender, age, sexual orientation, national origin, veteran status, disability, or any other protected status to all qualified applicants and volunteers. CyberUp is committed to a policy of non-discrimination and is dedicated to providing a positive discrimination-free educational work environment.
