Position Overview
The Curriculum Subject Matter Expert (SME) position is a University employee at the Minnesota Child Welfare Training Academy (MNCWTA). The University of Minnesotas Center for Advanced Studies in Child Welfare (CASCW) established the MN Child Welfare Training Academy (MNCWTA) in partnership with the MN Department of Children, Youth, and Family (DCYF), a new collaborative that focuses on creating impactful, inclusive, and accessible training opportunities to meet the needs of the many Minnesota child welfare workers and agencies.
The Curriculum SME supports the development of curriculum with staff curriculum developers at the MNCWTA while providing knowledge and expertise within training content. This includes professional and personal knowledge related to child welfare practice. We rely on the SME to inform, share, and participate in various stages of the curriculum development process across course development.
This position is based on campus. Per UMN policy, work may be done remotely when appropriate and approved by your manager.Â
Job Responsibilities
Collaboration (100%)
- Collaborates with curriculum development team on the proposed scope and sequence of the content within the training section and how the section fits within the topic and overall course
- Reviews and commits to deliverables that support project timelines
- The ability to Identify and explain how contributions to curriculum are aligned with the Minnesota Child Welfare Practice Competencies, and associated learning objectives.
- Provides perspectives, ideas and suggestions to the curriculum development team on topics including but not limited to: training scripts, activities, self-paced learning content, and application-based scenarios.Â
- Utilizes job aids, resources, and other materials to support contributions to curriculum.
- In some cases, provides support through development of video, scenario and story production by sharing knowledge and expertise
- Has availability for consultation at various times during the design and development phase beyond the formal meeting structure.
- Attends the Kick-off Meeting, The Mid-point check-in during the Design phase, the Curriculum Review meeting near the end of Development, and any other meetings upon request.
Required Qualifications
- B.S./B.A. in a related field
- 3 years of professional experience in child welfare or a related field, and/or personal experience with the child welfare system
- Experience collaborating and communicating with child welfare professionals and other Subject Matter Experts
- Demonstrated written and communication skills, including the ability to provide feedback
- Ability to leverage connections and network with professionals to monitor continual changes in child welfare
- Proven ability to collaborate and develop training in ways that effectively account for a variety of diverse backgrounds, communities, identities, and abilities
- Demonstrated ability to complete projects on time and ensure data is factual
- Demonstrated experience with Google Workspace related to managing, editing, and responding
Preferred Qualifications
- M.S.W or master degree in a related field
- Extensive knowledge of child welfare practice in Minnesota
- Practice experience as a child protection worker, child welfare worker, or in a related role
- Experience writing and developing curricula

Institute Overview
The Multidisciplinary Institute for Child Welfare (MICW) is a new organizing structure housing several dynamic research and training entities, including The Center for Advanced Studies in Child Welfare (CASCW), the Minnesota Linking Information for Kids (Minn-LInK) project, and the Minnesota Child Welfare Training Academy (MNCWTA). Each entity is grant-funded and self-sustaining. During an early phase of strategic planning for CASCW in 2024, the creation of the MICW emerged as an essential task to continue to support the growth and productivity of these entities while also continuing the mission of the School of Social Work and the College of Education and Human Development as it pertains to continued community service, growth, and innovation.
The Center for Advanced Studies in Child Welfare (CASCW) is a research and training center located within the School of Social Work in the College of Education and Human Development on the St. Paul campus of the University of Minnesota. CASCW supports the education and training of public child welfare professionals; identifies and examines effective child welfare practice methods, informs the public and policy makers about various child welfare issues, and incorporates research and evaluation findings into the School of Social Work curriculum.
Minn-LInK, an incredibly rich resource within the University and across the state of Minnesota, is an interdisciplinary, integrated, administrative data project used for research and evaluation projects aimed at understanding the experiences and outcomes of children, youth, and families who are multi-system involved. Minn-LInK staff provide research services to internal and external partners through grants and agreements.
The MNCWTA is a partnership between the Universitys MICW and the MN Department of Children, Youth, and Family (DCYF). The MNCWTA is responsible for the training and professional development of Minnesotas county and tribal child welfare frontline staff and supervisors. The mission is to train, develop, and support the skills, expertise, and well-being of Minnesotas child welfare workforce while nurturing a commitment to equitable child welfare practice.
