What is a Curricular Practical Training job?

Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is a type of work authorization for international students on F-1 visas, allowing them to gain practical experience directly related to their field of study. CPT must be an integral part of the curriculum and requires approval from both the student's academic institution and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). It can be part-time (during the academic year) or full-time (during breaks), but full-time CPT for 12 months may impact eligibility for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Curricular Practical Training position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Curricular Practical Training (CPT) roles, students should possess a solid academic background relevant to their field of study, along with strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Familiarity with industry-standard tools, software, or laboratory equipment—depending on the discipline—as well as valid CPT authorization from their university is essential. Initiative, adaptability, and effective communication help students excel as they integrate into professional environments and collaborate with seasoned employees. These competencies ensure that CPT participants maximize learning, contribute meaningfully, and transition smoothly between academic and workplace settings.
