Curricular Practical Training information

What is curricular practical training?

Curricular Practical Training (CPT) is a type of work authorization for international students on F-1 visas, allowing them to gain practical experience directly related to their field of study. CPT must be an integral part of the curriculum and requires approval from both the student's academic institution and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). It can be part-time (during the academic year) or full-time (during breaks), but full-time CPT for 12 months may impact eligibility for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

What kinds of work experiences or projects can I expect to undertake during curricular practical training?

During Curricular Practical Training, participants typically engage in hands-on projects and assignments that directly relate to their academic major or program. These experiences may include research support, data analysis, assisting with product development, client communications, or contributing to ongoing company initiatives. CPT positions often provide structured mentorship and supervision, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world business or technical settings. In many organizations, interns work collaboratively with diverse teams, gaining exposure to various departments and professional networks that can pave the way for future employment opportunities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in curricular practical training, and why are they important?

To thrive in Curricular Practical Training (CPT) roles, students should possess a solid academic background relevant to their field of study, along with strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Familiarity with industry-standard tools, software, or laboratory equipment—depending on the discipline—as well as valid CPT authorization from their university is essential. Initiative, adaptability, and effective communication help students excel as they integrate into professional environments and collaborate with seasoned employees. These competencies ensure that CPT participants maximize learning, contribute meaningfully, and transition smoothly between academic and workplace settings.

Can curricular practical training be paid?

Curricular Practical Training (CPT) can be paid or unpaid, depending on the employer and the specific internship or job. If paid, students must receive appropriate wages consistent with industry standards, and the employment must be directly related to their field of study and approved by the school's international office. Students should ensure that any compensation complies with relevant labor laws and their visa requirements.
