What is crop insurance?

Crop insurance is a type of coverage that protects farmers and agricultural producers from financial losses due to events such as natural disasters, adverse weather, pests, or disease that damage crops. It helps ensure that farmers can recover from unexpected setbacks and continue their operations even after a poor harvest. There are two main types: crop-yield insurance, which covers losses to actual crop production, and crop-revenue insurance, which protects against declines in the price of agricultural commodities. Crop insurance is often subsidized or offered through government programs, making it more accessible and affordable for farmers.

What are crop insurance jobs?

Crop insurance is purchased by a farmer to protect against natural disasters and a decline in the economy. The industry has various positions that support each business. A crop insurance underwriter completes data entry, prepares production reports and claims, and has duties related to crop insurance documentation. Crop insurance adjusters handle responsibilities when damage or loss has occurred, and inspections are necessary to assess the cause of loss and the depth of damage. Crop insurance specialists and crop insurance agents are also positions that focus on selling a policy, providing information, and assisting clients with insurance questions.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in crop insurance, and how can they overcome them?

Professionals in crop insurance often deal with challenges such as assessing unpredictable weather risks, ensuring accurate documentation from clients, and keeping up with regulatory changes. They regularly collaborate with farmers, underwriters, and adjusters to evaluate claims and provide timely support. Building strong relationships and staying current on industry trends through training or professional development can help mitigate these challenges. Attention to detail and effective communication are key to success in this role.

Role Details
Job Title: Crop Insurance Adjuster
Location: Remote-CA
Reports To: Joe Kemph
Employment Type: Full Time
Job Requisition ID: 2026-710
Requisition Begin Date: 7/17/2026

Role Overview:
ProAg has an exciting opportunity for a Crop Adjuster to join our team in the Sacramento Valley area. Imagine joining a team that's part of an organization that shares your passion for American Agriculture. A team that understands the challenges ag producers face and the disproportionate financial risks they shoulder. How do you know this team has that passion and understanding? Because many of us at ProAg still farm and ranch ourselves or were raised on the farm or ranch. It's in our blood.

As a ProAg Crop Adjuster, you will make first contact with our policy holder on the farm or ranch that has just experienced a loss. You will work with our customer to complete field inspections, read maps and aerial photos, measure fields and storage bins, collecting production records of farm commodities, all the while assessing damage or loss. You'll stick with each claim for each grower until the work is done and the claim is settled.

Reporting to the Area Claims Supervisor, you will work regularly in the field on the farms, climbing grain bins, walking over rough terrain for long distances, etc. You will apply your good judgment, common sense and understanding of ProAg's adjusting guidelines and policy provisions for a variety of Multi-Peril Crop Insurance, Crop Hail, and Named Peril policies.

In this position, you will work from home and cover a territory of the Sacramento Valley. This position will require travel of up to 75%, occasionally even beyond your assigned territory.

In this Exciting Opportunity, You Will:
Perform fact-finding to determine cause(s) and percentage of loss, exercising your best independent judgment in the handling of claims. Escalate any issues or problems that you can't resolve to the Area Claims Supervisor.
Convey regulations and interpretation of procedure to claimants, agents, and industry people on claim situations.
Effectively communicate our position on developing industry topics such as new specialty crops or expanding coverage programs.
Continuously expand your knowledge of RMA rules and regulations and ProAg procedures for applying all MPCI, Crop Hail, and Federal Crop Insurance regulations.

What You Bring:
High school diploma
Crop insurance experience in claims or compliance or any ag-related experience and background
Analytical skills and attention to detail
Basic computer and internet applications
Communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills
Reliable means of transportation and the willingness to travel
Completion of your Claim Adjuster Proficiency Program (CAPP) certification and/or any applicable licenses required by State agencies preferred.

What We Offer:
Competitive salary and comprehensive benefit package
Strong learning culture with ongoing development opportunities
Opportunities for growth and career advancement
Comprehensive medical, vision, and dental coverage, with eligibility beginning on your first day of employment
Basic life and disability insurance
401(k) plan with 6% company match
20 days of PTO, three floating holidays, approximately 10 paid holidays, and volunteer time off
Paid parental leave
Access to our award-winning wellness program, including mental health services, fitness network membership, and a complimentary Headspace subscription
Student loan matching program
Employee discount program
An opportunity to do meaningful work and love what you do
