What You'll Do:

As the Assistant Controller at JJ Powell, you'll partner with the Controller to help ensure the accuracy, integrity, and efficiency of the Company's accounting operations while supporting sound financial decision-making across the organization.

  • Support Accounting Operations: Assist the Controller in overseeing the daily operations of the accounting department and help ensure accurate and timely financial reporting.
  • Lead Credit & Collections: Supervise the Company's credit function by monitoring accounts receivable, collection activities, customer payment trends, and credit exposure while providing leadership and support to the Credit team.
  • Maintain Financial Records: Review journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, account reconciliations, and accounting transactions to maintain the integrity of the general ledger.
  • Prepare Financial Statements: Prepare monthly financial statements, supporting schedules, and other financial reports for management review.
  • Support Financial Planning: Partner with business unit leaders to develop annual budgets, quarterly forecasts, and financial projections.
  • Analyze Financial Performance: Review financial results, investigate budget variances, and provide recommendations to support informed business decisions.
  • Manage Credit Risk: Review customer credit limits, payment terms, account holds, payment arrangements, and write-offs while helping maintain effective credit and collection policies.
  • Support Cash Management & Compliance: Participate in cash management, banking activities, tax reporting, audits, regulatory compliance, and financial planning.
  • Drive Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, strengthen internal controls, and enhance ERP system efficiency.
  • Serve as the Controller's Backup: Provide support during the Controller's absence and assist with other accounting and financial responsibilities as needed.

Qualifications:

  • 3–5 years of progressive accounting experience with supervisory experience preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance is a plus
  • Previous experience preparing financial statements and supporting month-end close
  • Experience with ERP systems
  • Experience in petroleum, energy distribution, retail, convenience store, or multi-location accounting is a plus
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • High level of integrity, accuracy, and attention to detail
