Job description

Murray Resources is seeking a Controller to oversee accounting and financial operations. This is a hands-on position that will personally handle AP, financial close, reconciliations, reporting, and cash management, while overseeing payroll and AR staff. The ideal candidate is a strategic, data-driven leader with a deep knowledge of accounting principles, financial regulations, and compliance standards.


Location: Houston, TX

Schedule: Hybrid


Responsibilities:

  • Own monthly, quarterly, and year-end close, including AP, GL coding, accruals, journal entries, and reconciliations
  • Maintain financial reporting for 2 business entities
  • Coordinate with the company's CPA on reviews, close, and tax requests
  • Prepare the recurring finance package for leadership; maintain weekly/monthly/quarterly reporting
  • Analyze revenue, margins, client profitability, and other operating metrics
  • Calculate quarterly reporting and support ad hoc financial modeling
  • Monitor cash position; manage banking relationships and the line of credit
  • Maintain cash-control procedures, including for temporary staffing payroll
  • Manage payroll and AR staff; serve as escalation point for accounting questions
  • Review AR aging, write-offs, and payment-term exceptions
  • Evaluate client credit risk; maintain the credit-review process
  • Manage state registrations and compliance filings as the company expands
  • Maintain strong QuickBooks Desktop knowledge; work across ADP, Bullhorn, and banking platforms
  • Use advanced Excel to build and improve reporting and identify automation opportunities


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or related field
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting experience (Controller, Assistant Controller, or Accounting Manager level)
  • Comfort using AI tools (e.g., Claude, ChatGPT) to streamline routine work; experience building or refining AI-assisted workflows.
  • Demonstrated ownership of monthly close and financial-statement accuracy
  • Strong GL, AP, reconciliation, and journal entry experience
  • Advanced Excel skills; strong QuickBooks experience (Desktop preferred)
  • Experience overseeing payroll/AR functions and working with external CPAs
  • Experience with ADP payroll

  • CPA or CPA-level knowledge
  • Staffing industry background
  • Power BI/automation experience
  • Experience with Bullhorn software
