How much do corrosion engineer jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 22, 2026, the average yearly pay for corrosion engineer in Indiana is $91,156.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $77,100.00 and $110,400.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a corrosion engineer?

A corrosion engineer determines ways to repair or prevent corrosion on industrial machinery at a manufacturing plant or infrastructure projects, such as metal bridges, oil and gas pipelines, mines, and waste management facilities. Although closely related to metallurgy, corrosion engineering can address issues in non-metallic objects, such as ceramics, carbon, graphite, and cement. Your duties and responsibilities in this career include both fieldwork repair and lab work, where you try to determine ways to prevent corrosion on materials. In the field, you perform maintenance and repair work and collect data on the environmental conditions that affect corrosion.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a corrosion engineer?

To thrive as a Corrosion Engineer, you need a solid background in materials science, chemistry, and engineering principles, typically supported by a degree in chemical, materials, or mechanical engineering. Familiarity with industry-standard testing methods, corrosion modeling software, and certifications such as NACE or AMPP are commonly required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills in this field. These abilities are crucial for accurately diagnosing corrosion issues, developing mitigation strategies, and ensuring the safety and longevity of infrastructure and equipment.

What are some common challenges faced by corrosion engineers in managing aging infrastructure?

Corrosion Engineers often encounter challenges such as limited access to historical data, outdated materials, and budget constraints when assessing and maintaining aging infrastructure. They must devise inspection and mitigation strategies that balance safety, regulatory compliance, and cost-effectiveness. Collaborating closely with operations, maintenance, and safety teams is crucial to implement preventative measures and ensure the long-term integrity of assets.

What is the difference between Corrosion Engineer vs Materials Engineer?

AspectCorrosion EngineerMaterials Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in corrosion engineering, materials science, or related field; certifications like NACE CIPBachelor's or higher in materials science, metallurgy, or engineering; certifications vary
Work EnvironmentIndustrial plants, oil & gas, pipelines, maritime, power plantsManufacturing, product development, research labs, construction
Industry UsageSpecialized in corrosion prevention, inspection, and mitigationFocuses on material selection, testing, and development for various applications

While both roles involve materials and engineering principles, Corrosion Engineers specialize in preventing and managing corrosion issues in industrial settings, whereas Materials Engineers focus on developing and testing materials for diverse applications. The roles often overlap but serve distinct purposes within engineering projects.
