What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Cook, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cook, foundational skills in food preparation, kitchen safety, and menu planning are essential, often supported by a culinary degree or relevant experience. Familiarity with kitchen equipment, food safety certifications (such as ServSafe), and inventory management systems is typically required. Attention to detail, time management, teamwork, and adaptability are crucial soft skills for success in a busy kitchen environment. These abilities ensure consistent food quality, efficient operations, and a positive dining experience for customers.

Adapting to last-minute menu changes or handling special dietary requests can also add to the complexity of the role.

About Us:
At 185 Restaurant, located at 185 Little Florida Rd, Poquoson, VA, we’re more than just a dining spot—we’re a community favorite, celebrated for our fresh, scratch-made American and Continental dishes served with warm, gracious hospitality. Opened in 2020, our cozy, eclectic eatery has earned a 4.8/5 rating on Tripadvisor and Google, and a spot on Yelp’s Top 100 Restaurants in the U.S. in 2023. From our signature smash-browns to mouthwatering brisket sandwiches, we’re passionate about elevating hometown cooking with a creative flair.
Position: Line Cook
Type: Full-Time or Part-Time
Location: 185 Restaurant, 185 Little Florida Rd, Poquoson, VA 23662
Compensation: Competitive hourly wage (based on experience), matching 401K, employee discounts, and growth within the company.
Why Join Us?

  • Be Part of Something Special: Work in a fast-paced, supportive environment where your passion for food and hospitality shines. Our open kitchen lets you connect with guests and showcase your skills.
  • Make a Difference: Contribute to a menu that’s loved for its bold flavors, fresh ingredients, and creative twists—like our famous 185 Plate and creole cheese grits.
  • Grow with Us: We’re always on the lookout for talented individuals eager to learn and grow in a tight-knit team. No prior restaurant experience? We’ll train you!
  • Enjoy the Perks: Flexible schedules, a vibrant team atmosphere, and the chance to work in a charming, community-driven restaurant with a loyal following.
What You’ll Do:

  • Prepare and cook high-quality dishes with precision, including breakfast favorites, sandwiches, salads, and specials, following our recipes and standards.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe kitchen, adhering to food safety regulations.
  • Collaborate with our passionate team to ensure every plate reflects our commitment to excellence.
  • Assist in setting up and breaking down the kitchen, managing inventory, and contributing to menu creativity.
  • Bring energy and enthusiasm to a fast-paced environment, ensuring guests leave with a smile.
What We’re Looking For:

  • Passion for food and a desire to create memorable dining experiences.
  • Ability to thrive in a high-energy, team-oriented kitchen.
  • Experience as a line cook or prep cook is a plus, but we’re happy to train motivated individuals.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to food safety and quality.
  • Availability to work flexible hours; however, weekends are required (restaurant hours: Tue - Sun 7:00 AM–4:00 PM).
Why 185 Restaurant?
Our small, eclectic dining room and open-air patio create a warm, welcoming vibe that’s as unique as our food. With a 4.9-star rating on Sirved and glowing reviews for our friendly staff and delicious dishes, you’ll be joining a team that’s proud to be a Poquoson staple. Whether it’s crafting the perfect veggie omelet or grilling up our signature smash-browns, your work will make a lasting impression.
