GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Acts as an assistant to a Cook Manager and is directly responsible to him/her; expected to continually learn more about his/her job by attending meetings called by the Food Service Supervisor and other professional meetings; represents the Wooster City School District in a favorable manner at all times.ย 
ย 


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Training and/ or experience in institutional food preparation and service, or equivalent.
  • Serv Safe Certified.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assists in ordering and maintaining food and supplies for his/her building.
  • Prepares daily meals either in a base kitchen or satellite kitchen for students and staff (e.g., follow prescribed nutritional guidelines, determine quantities of food items needed, determine servings portions, etc.).
  • Check for plate waste.
  • Maintains and monitors required inventories; prepared food and supply orders; maintains records of purchased items; maintains documentation related to food production records, school lunch patterns, monies, and participation.
  • Ensures that the kitchen, dining room, and kitchen equipment are maintained in a clean and sanitary manner following established procedures; ensures that the cleaning of meat slicers, ovens, stoves, tables etc . is performed according to established standards.
  • Maintains menu and production records, maintains monthly inventories of purchased foods, donated foods, and supplies.
  • Utilizes proper storage techniques and procedures on all food and supply items.
  • Is familiar with all job stations in the kitchen.
  • Is responsible for "on the floor or on-site" supervision in the kitchen but refers any questions of work organization to the Cook Manager or Food Service Supervisor.
  • After gaining experience and in an emergency situation, can take over for Cook Manager.
  • Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists co-workers as required.
  • Performs other tasks as needed from time to time.

INHERENTLY HAZARDOUS AND PHYSICALLY DEMANDING WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Occasional exposure to high temperatures caused by ovens, stoves, dishwashers, etc ..
  • Operation of ovens, slicers, food grinders, etc .
  • Occasional use of cleaning solvents and chemicals.
  • Lifting and moving supplies, food products, equipment, etc.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS: (* indicates developed after employment)

ย KNOWLEDGE OF: Board policies*, basic institutional food preparation techniques, basic supervisory techniques, safety practices and procedures*, use and care of kitchen equipment and appliances, menu planning, inventory control and purchasing procedures.ย 
ABILITY TO:ย  calculate fractions, decimals and percentages, prepare and maintain routine records and reports, perform light to moderate manual labor.
SKILL IN: operating/using institutional kitchen equipment, appliances and utensils, food preparation techniques and procedures.ย
