Position Summary

The Assistant General Manager is responsible for the efficient, professional, and profitable operation of the Hilliard Convention Center, with a primary focus on convention sales and operations. In addition to assisting with managing the day-to-day business operations, the Assistant General Manager solicits new sources of revenue, independently for local business and in cooperation with Visit Corpus Christi on city-wide business. In partnership with the General Manager, responsible for overall management, promotion, and operation of the convention center, including policy administration, booking, marketing, finance, box office, advertising, and related operations for Hilliard Convention Center.

This role pays an annual salary of $115,000 - $130,000 and is bonus eligible.

About the Venue

Hilliard Centerย is Corpus Christi's premier entertainment and event complex, proudly owned by the City of Corpus Christi and managed by Oak View Group. Named in partnership with Hilliard Law, a firm dedicated to service and community, the waterfront venue features a state-of-the-art arena, the historic Selena Auditorium, and a versatile convention center overlooking the scenic Corpus Christi Bay. With adaptable spaces, complimentary Wi-Fi, and premium food and beverage offerings, Hilliard Center is designed to deliver exceptional experiences as South Texas' home for live entertainment, conventions, and community gatherings.

Responsibilities
  • Assists the GM in the efficient, professional, and financially successful management of the Hilliard Convention Center, with a strong focus on driving convention sales and executing high-quality event operations.
  • Actively identifies and pursues new revenue opportunities, independently targeting local business while collaborating with Visit Corpus Christi to secure citywide conventions and events.
  • Aggressively promotes the use of the facility to maximize its utilization and negotiates lease agreements as determined necessary and in the best interests of the Hilliard Convention Center.
  • Evaluates existing policies and procedures and recommends improvements that will better reflect the needs of the facility and/or improve the efficiency and safety of operations
  • Helps conduct weekly production meetings.
  • Assists in developing and administering a detailed operating budget and forecast of additional funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Manages the monitoring of and approves expenditures and instructs and implements adjustments as necessary.
  • Responsible for recruiting, training, supervising, and evaluating convention sales staff.
  • Manage and participate in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities of all sales programs and activities.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with civic organizations, city personnel, Visit Corpus Christi, and lessees.
  • Prepare written proposals; reevaluate potential business value of various events and clients; initiate contractual arrangements.
  • Conduct tours of the facility for potential licensees; answer questions and provide information regarding facility capabilities.
  • Oversees the development of standard operating procedures for all convention sales and operations.
  • Oversees the preparation of required and necessary reports/records for the city and/or corporate.
  • Meets regularly with the Director of Marketing to discuss publicity, event promotion, and Group Experiences issues and needs.
  • Meets regularly with Convention Sales staff to discuss sales leads, trends, and business opportunities.
  • Travel to regional areas throughout the year in search of new business.
  • Other duties as assigned by the General Manager and SVP of convention centers.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
  • 5-7 years of increasingly responsible sales experience in an arena, convention center, sports franchise, hotel, or other similar public assembly or hospitality facility, including management or director-level responsibility.
  • Bachelor's degree or better from an accredited college or university with major coursework in Marketing, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Ability to work event nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Has a strong track record of building relationships and generating new business.
  • Excellent organizational skills, leadership skills, and customer service skills.
  • Must be able to motivate and coach teams.
  • Strong PC and data processing skills; working knowledge of MS Word and Excel, as well as database management software.
