Job description

Arkansas Talent Group is seeking a hands-on Nonprofit Controller for a mission-driven organization. This is a contract-to-permanent opportunity, offering the chance to begin in a contract capacity and transition into a permanent role based on performance, organizational needs, and mutual fit.

The Controller will oversee the organization's financial operations, ensure compliance with accounting standards and regulations, and provide strategic financial guidance that supports the organization's mission, sustainability, and growth.

Responsibilities

Financial Management

  • Develop and implement financial policies, procedures, and internal controls to safeguard organizational assets and maintain compliance with applicable accounting standards and regulations.
  • Oversee daily accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, cash management, reconciliations, and general ledger maintenance.
  • Prepare and analyze timely, accurate financial statements, management reports, budgets, and forecasts for senior leadership and the Board of Directors.

Budgeting and Forecasting

  • Lead the annual budgeting process in partnership with program managers and department leaders.
  • Monitor budget performance and conduct variance analysis, identifying concerns and recommending corrective action as needed.
  • Prepare financial forecasts and projections to support strategic decision-making, resource allocation, and organizational planning.

Grants Management

  • Support financial oversight of grants, including compliance with grant requirements, reporting deadlines, restricted funding, and required documentation.
  • Partner with program and leadership teams to ensure accurate tracking and reporting of grant-related financial activity.

Audit and Compliance

  • Coordinate annual financial audits, as well as other external audits, reviews, or reporting requirements.
  • Work closely with auditors to provide requested documentation and respond to audit findings and recommendations.
  • Stay current on changes in accounting standards, nonprofit regulations, and financial best practices to ensure continued compliance.

Financial Planning and Analysis

  • Provide strategic financial analysis and recommendations to support organizational growth, long-term sustainability, and mission impact.
  • Develop financial models and scenario analyses to evaluate strategic initiatives, investments, and operational decisions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred.
  • At least 5 years of progressive financial management experience, preferably within a nonprofit organization.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit accounting principles, financial reporting, and internal controls.
  • Experience with grant accounting and restricted-fund reporting is strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency with accounting software and financial management systems; QuickBooks Online experience is preferred.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with staff, leadership, board members, auditors, and external stakeholders.
