Job description

Position Purpose
Provide electrical and controls engineering support and project management for both capital and operations and maintenance projects at Madison Gas and Electric Company's (MGE) power generation facilities.
Core Responsibilities
  • Provide engineering support and project management for capital projects, including development, research, cost estimation, scope identification, bid evaluation, contractor coordination, documentation control, and commissioning.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve operating and maintenance problems involving plant equipment.
  • Coordinate with internal and external entities to acquire project scope, schedule, and budget information during project development through project implementation.
  • Perform tests designed to acquire data on power plant equipment; analyze results, develop reports, and make recommendations.
  • Perform or oversee load flow, arc flash, coordination, and protective settings studies for generation facilities.
  • Identify needs for upgrades and improvements to plant electrical and process control systems, applications, and Digital Control System network devices.
  • Conduct studies and tests on process control equipment, including commissioning, tuning, and testing PLC logic and HMI functionality.
  • Assist operations with switching operations to move load or deenergize buses or equipment.
  • Interface with American Transmission Company to coordinate protective settings, generator testing, and ratings.
  • Maintain compliance with applicable NERC standards for generation facilities.
  • Communicate and coordinate with Information Technology (IT) for new control devices, obsolete device replacements, hardware renewals, software licensing, patching, and version control.
  • Lead or assist in root cause analysis of plant component failures.
  • Locate, maintain, and update documentation including drawings, manuals, and instructions.
  • Maintain and improve documentation control and change management standards for process control systems, applications, and network control devices.
Skills
  • Knowledge of electrical engineering principles including high-, medium-, and low-voltage power systems.
  • Understanding of boilers, turbines, generators, electric motors, and variable frequency drive systems.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and develop electrical drawings, wiring diagrams, and schematics.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills to manage multiple projects effectively.
  • Familiarity with PLCs, HMI software, and network devices such as servers, switches, routers, hubs, fiber optics, and firewalls.
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from an accredited four-year university is required.
  • Valid driver's license is required.
Experience
  • Experience reading, interpreting, and developing electrical drawings, wiring diagrams, and schematics.
  • Experience with utility electrical and controls systems is preferred.
  • Previous work experience in a power plant or industrial setting is preferred.
Work Location
  • This onsite role is based at our Madison, WI power plant locations.
