Product Designer (Contract)

Unlearn

San Francisco, CA • On-site, Remote

Contractor

Medical, Dental, Vision, Retirement, PTO

Job description

Our Mission and Vision
Unlearn exists to transform clinical development by making every trial smarter. We harness data, AI, and digital twins to enable faster, more robust studies that bring life-saving treatments to patients faster. This mission drives everything we do as we partner with biopharmaceutical companies to redesign how clinical trials are planned, run, and analyzed.
We are defining the future of clinical development with unmatched scientific credibility, replacing uncertainty with AI-powered precision so decisions are clearer and trials are stronger. We don't just disrupt the pharmaceutical industry, we create lasting change.
We believe AI will define the future of medicine, and we are committed to building that future responsibly, rigorously, and in close collaboration with our partners in clinical development.
About Our Team
We come from a variety of backgrounds ranging from machine learning to marketing-but regardless of where we come from, Unlearners share some common traits:
  • Unlearners are ambitious; we aren't intimidated by big, challenging goals.
  • Unlearners are disciplined experimenters; we break down our big goals into smaller chunks and meet as often as necessary to track our velocity and iterate quickly.
  • Unlearners are gritty; we never give up, setbacks just make us try harder.
  • Unlearners are receptive to new ideas; in fact, we hate being stuck with the status quo
  • Unlearners are storytellers; sharing information with each other and with the world is super important, too important to be boring. And, last but not least,
  • Unlearners are team-oriented; we put the mission first, the company second, the team third, and individuals last.

Headquartered in San Francisco, Unlearn was founded in 2017 by a team of world-class machine learning scientists. We have raised venture capital from top tier investors such as Altimeter, Insight Partners, Radical Ventures, 8VC, DCVC, and DCVC Bio, and completed our $50 million Series C in January 2024.
If our purpose and culture resonate with you, we invite you to apply.
Type: Contract, 30-40 hrs/week
Location: Hybrid, San Francisco
Duration: 6 months; potential to convert to full-time
Role
We're looking for a Product Designer to join our team on a contract basis and help build out the Unlearn Platform - a connected product suite powered by digital twin technology, data and AI that helps clinical development teams drive decisions across the trial lifecycle. You'll own end-to-end design for features within a defined product area - taking work from discovery through prototyping, validation, and delivery - in close partnership with PMs and Engineering. You'll work within our existing design system and design patterns, applying a high bar for craft while moving quickly.
This is a hands-on execution role. We are designing highly technical, industry-specific, data-rich tools with complex workflows. The ideal candidate is a strong maker who's comfortable with ambiguity at the feature level, communicates design decisions clearly, and is energized by complex, data-rich problems. There's meaningful potential for this contract to convert to a full-time position for the right fit.
What You'll Do
  • Design end-to-end for assigned features - from discovery and concept through prototyping, validation, and delivery
  • Collaborate day-to-day with Product Management, Engineering and Science to build intuitive, elegant user experiences.
  • Produce high-fidelity mockups and interactive prototypes that meet our standards for quality and consistency.
  • Apply and extend our existing design system rather than build it from scratch.
  • Lead user research and usability testing; translate findings into design improvements.
  • Develop a working understanding of our biopharma customers' workflows and pain points.
Who You Are
  • Craftsperson. You hold a high bar for design quality, and you also know when to ship, learn, and iterate.
  • User-centered. You start with empathy and advocate for user needs while respecting business and technical realities.
  • Curious & intentional. You ask "why," sweat the details, and can clearly explain the rationale behind your decisions.
  • Collaborative. You thrive in multidisciplinary teams and integrate input from product management, science and engineering.
  • Resilient & adaptable. You stay focused through churn, ambiguity, and iteration.
Qualifications
  • 3-5 years of product design experience, with a portfolio showing strong interaction design, visual design, and problem-solving.
  • Experience designing complex workflows or analytic tools (data visualization experience is a strong plus).
  • Fluent working within an existing design system.
  • Expert in Figma and modern prototyping tools.
  • Strong communication and storytelling; able to articulate and defend design decisions.
  • Experience contributing to user research and usability testing.
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced, agile environment, managing multiple efforts at once.
  • Exposure to 0→1 product work is a plus.
  • Knowledge of healthcare, biopharma, or clinical trials is a plus, not required.
What a Great Portfolio Looks Like
  • Case studies that describe goals, research insights, constraints, concepts, tradeoffs, and impact.
  • Evidence of craft and clear problem-solving - not just visual polish.
  • Work involving data-rich or workflow-heavy products.

Benefits & Perks
The following benefits and perks are for full time roles only.
  • Generous equity participation
  • 100% company-covered medical, dental, & vision insurance plans
  • 401k plan with matching
  • Flexible PTO plus company holidays
  • Annual company-wide break December 24 through January 1
  • Commuter benefits
  • Paid Parental Leave

At Unlearn, we are committed to building a diverse and inclusive workplace, because inclusion and diversity are essential to achieving our mission. If you're excited about this role, and your past experience doesn't align perfectly with every qualification in the job description, we encourage you to apply nevertheless.
