What is contract technology?

Contract technology refers to digital tools and software designed to streamline the creation, management, execution, and analysis of contracts. These solutions help organizations automate contract workflows, ensure compliance, and reduce risks associated with manual processes. Contract technology often includes features like electronic signatures, contract lifecycle management (CLM), and integration with other business systems. It is widely used by legal, procurement, and sales teams to improve efficiency and transparency in handling contractual agreements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in contract technology?

To thrive in Contract Technology, you need a strong understanding of contract law, lifecycle management, and digital transformation, often supported by a degree in law, business, or information systems. Familiarity with contract lifecycle management (CLM) platforms, e-signature tools, and compliance software is essential. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and strong communication skills help professionals manage complex agreements and collaborate with legal and business teams. These skills ensure accurate contract execution, reduce risk, and drive operational efficiency within organizations.

Professionals in Contract Technology often encounter challenges such as managing large volumes of contracts, ensuring compliance with evolving regulations, and integrating contract management systems with existing enterprise software. These challenges can be addressed by staying updated on legal and technological changes, collaborating closely with legal and IT teams, and leveraging automation tools to streamline workflows. About the Opportunity

Ellucian has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Contracts & Legal Operations Manager to join its Legal team at our Reston, VA headquarters.

We are seeking a business-minded, technology-forward professional who brings a strong combination of commercial contract management, SaaS and technology agreement experience, and Legal Operations expertise.

This is a true hybrid role. You will be responsible for reviewing, managing, and conducting first-level negotiations of complex SaaS, software, services, and data privacy agreements while also helping transform how Ellucian's Legal organization manages contracts, technology, workflows, and processes.

A significant component of the role will be helping lead the implementation and ongoing optimization of Ellucian's contract lifecycle management (CLM) platform. Handsโ€‘on experience with Ironclad is strongly preferred, but we are open to candidates with deep experience implementing, administering, or optimizing other leading CLM platforms.

If you enjoy negotiating technology contracts, improving how Legal gets work done, and using technology and automation to build more scalable processes, this could be a great fit.

Where You Will Make an Impact
  • Manage contracts and conduct first-level negotiations of SaaS, software, licensing, professional services, data privacy, and other commercial technology agreements.
  • Serve as a trusted Legal partner to Sales, Deal Desk, Order Management, IT, and other business teams, helping move deals forward while balancing Legal playbook positions with business priorities.
  • Review, prepare, revise, and manage complex customer agreements while identifying contractual risks, escalating issues appropriately, and providing practical, business-oriented solutions.
  • Develop and maintain contract templates, negotiation playbooks, clause libraries, policies, and contracting standards to improve consistency, efficiency, and scalability.
  • Lead and support the implementation, deployment, and ongoing optimization of Ellucian's contract lifecycle management (CLM) platform, serving as a key Legal stakeholder throughout the transformation.
  • Own and help design CLM workflows spanning contract intake, template generation, review and negotiation, approvals, electronic signature, contract storage, reporting, and postโ€‘execution management.
  • Translate Legal and business requirements into scalable workflows, templates, approval rules, clause libraries, and system configurations.
  • Partner with Legal, IT, Sales, Deal Desk, Order Management, and other stakeholders on requirements gathering, implementation planning, contract and data migration, system integrations, user acceptance testing, deployment and issue resolution.
  • Develop and execute CLM adoption and changeโ€‘management strategies, including stakeholder communications, training, documentation, and ongoing support.
  • Serve as a Legal business owner and subjectโ€‘matter expert for the CLM platform following implementation, establishing governance and continuously improving workflows and processes as business needs evolve.
  • Leverage CLM data, reporting, and analytics to measure contract cycle times, identify bottlenecks, monitor adoption and compliance, and recommend operational improvements.
  • Identify opportunities to leverage legal technology, workflow automation, and AIโ€‘enabled capabilities to improve efficiency, consistency, visibility, and the delivery of Legal services.
  • Build strong relationships across the organization and proactively identify opportunities to improve how Legal partners with and supports the business.
  • Develop and maintain a strong understanding of Ellucian's product portfolio and the systems and processes supporting the contracting lifecycle.
  • Support broader Legal Operations initiatives and crossโ€‘functional special projects as needed.
What You Will Bring
  • 8+ years of experience spanning commercial contract management, SaaS/technology contracting, Legal Operations, or related responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated experience reviewing, managing, and negotiating SaaS, software licensing, technology, professional services, and related commercial agreements.
  • Strong understanding of the end-to-end contracting lifecycle, from intake and negotiation through approvals, execution, storage, reporting, renewals, and postโ€‘execution management.
  • Experience partnering directly with Sales, Deal Desk, Order Management, Legal, IT, and other business stakeholders in a fastโ€‘paced commercial environment.
  • Demonstrated experience with Legal Operations, process improvement, workflow design, or contracting transformation initiatives.
  • Handsโ€‘on experience with contract lifecycle management technology, including implementation, administration, workflow configuration, optimization, adoption, or transformation.
  • Ironclad experience is strongly preferred. Candidates with significant experience using or implementing comparable enterprise CLM platforms such as Icertis, Agiloft, DocuSign CLM, Conga CLM, Sirion, ContractPodAi, LinkSquares, or similar solutions will also be considered.
  • Experience translating Legal and business requirements into scalable workflows, templates, playbooks, approval processes, and technology-enabled solutions.
  • Strong curiosity and enthusiasm for using technology, automation, data, analytics, and AI to improve Legal Operations and contracting processes.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
  • Strong business judgment and a practical, solutionsโ€‘oriented approach to balancing contractual risk with commercial objectives.
  • Highly organized, detailโ€‘oriented, resourceful, and capable of managing multiple contracts, projects, and priorities simultaneously.
  • Experience supporting Board activities, corporate governance, or related paralegal/paraprofessional responsibilities is a plus.
