ABOUT THE ACLU OF NORTH CAROLINA:
The ACLU of North Carolina (ACLU-NC) is an affiliate of the National ACLU. For 60 years, the ACLU-NC has worked in courts, legislatures, and communities to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution and laws of the United States. Whether it's achieving full equality for LGBTQ+ people, working to transform our broken and racist criminal legal system, defending freedom of speech, religion, and the right to protest, or preserving the right to vote or the right to have an abortion, the ACLU takes up the toughest civil liberties cases and issues to defend all people from government abuse and overreach.
Two critical components of our work are uplifting the voices and leadership of impacted people and applying an anti-racist lens to all aspects of our internal and external functions including but not limited to our issue campaigns, recruitment and human resources, strategic planning, donor and volunteer relations, Board and committee processes, and deciding what cases to litigate. We are looking for candidates who share our commitment to our values.
The ACLU-NC brings together litigation, legislative advocacy, communications, and organizing strategies to empower communities and achieve our objectives in major issue areas including criminal law reform, voting rights, LGBTQ+ equality, reproductive freedom, and the rights of immigrants. With more than 40,000 members and supporters across the state, the ACLU-NC has a staff of more than 25 people with an office in Durham.
THE OPPORTUNITY:
The ACLU-NC seeks to enlist two (2) temporary Contract Organizers to support and help implement the organization's 2026 electoral goals. One Organizer will be based in Mecklenburg (Charlotte, Huntersville, Davidson); and one Organizer will be based in the Triangle (Raleigh, Fuquay-Varina, Holly Springs). Under the direction and supervision of the ACLU-NC Organizing Director, and working alongside department staff, the Contract Organizer will be responsible for supporting the recruitment of volunteers and engaging in on-the-ground electoral tactics for the 2026 upcoming elections. The purpose of this position is to educate and mobilize voters and to provide general voter information to amplify civil rights. This position is non-partisan and will not advertise, endorse, or oppose any particular candidate or party. The Organizers will begin a contracted term on September 14, 2026, and conclude on November 13, 2026.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Lead and support weeknight and weekend volunteer canvasses, including launching canvasses, training and supporting volunteers in the field, troubleshooting, and completing debriefs.
  • Contact voters during the week through solo door-to-door canvassing, phone-banking, and text-banking.
  • Support recruitment of volunteers to further the ACLU-NC's electoral engagement efforts, including by conducting 1:1s, supporting the planning and execution of canvasses, phone banks, and text banks, and maintaining and entering accurate data on volunteers.
  • Support and participate in community events and volunteer recruitment efforts, including helping with event setup and breakdown, tabling, and engaging attendees about the ACLU of North Carolina Use technology including VAN, MiniVAN, EveryAction, and Scale to Win to connect with voters, input data, and organize volunteers.

TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THIS ROLE, THE CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:
  • A valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle (will need to drive to canvassing locations); a mobile phone with access to the Internet.
  • Ability to work in outdoor conditions and walk various distances.
  • Unwavering commitment to the mission and goals of the ACLU, including a demonstrated commitment to racial justice and civil rights issues.
  • Experience participating and leading election activities including phone banking, door-to-door canvassing, text banking and tabling.
  • Experience recruiting, training, and supervising volunteers.
  • An interest in electoral/voter access, and general understanding of elections.
  • Commitment to meeting high standards and a history of getting things done even in the face of obstacles.
  • A history of working collaboratively and successfully with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability and willingness to work irregular hours, including weekends and evenings.
  • Willingness to work across the Triangle Area of North Carolina, including Raleigh, Fuquay-Varina, Holly Springs; and/or across the North Charlotte, Huntersville, Davidson areas of Mecklenburg County.
  • Experience using election technology including VAN and MiniVAN.

COMPENSATION:
  • This is a contract position, averaging 15-20 hours per week.
  • The total compensation for the contracted term is $7,500 for each Organizer, inclusive of transportation and cell phone usage. Payment will be made in two equal installments: 50% upon execution of the contract and 50% upon completion of the contract.
