Metallurgical Engineer /Laboratory Manager

· $95,000 to $130,000 per year - based on experience

Position Summary:

The Metallurgical Engineer/Laboratory Manager is responsible for oversight of conducting Mechanical and Non-Destructive Testing on fasteners and materials in accordance with written and approved procedures and work instructions. They provide Engineering reviews for Engineering and Management for new applications. They review material and test specifications and assure appropriate test methods, recording devices and documentation. They write and modify procedures for all testing and safety and parts preparation (assisting the Level III NDE they assign the NDT Procedures and train, qualify, and supervise Laboratory Technicians.  They are also responsible for implementing safety procedures and guidelines, assuring calibration compliance and equipment working condition, as well as implementing the Quality Management System (QMS) in compliance with AS9100 standards. This role must also be capable of performing the functions of a Laboratory Technician for purposes of training and assistance.  The Metallurgical Engineer/Laboratory Manager conducts their testing independent of production and accepts or rejects components solely based on test and code/specification requirements.


Key Roles & Responsibilities:

Quality Management System (QMS)

  • Understand and follow the company’s AS9100D-certified QMS.
  • Ensure all activities are in accordance with procedures / work instructions.
  • Ensure accurate documentation of testing, current calibration of instruments and gages used, and track training records.
  • Interact and coordinate with Technicians as well as training others.
  • Conduct internal audits, personnel reviews, and QMS performance reporting.


Leadership and Oversight

  • Supervise the testing and documentation of components with accurate and professional control.
  • Provide mentoring, and development of all laboratory staff as required.
  • Serve as the laboratory management lead, communicating test priorities, test status, and equipment status to the Laboratory Technicians and other Department Managers.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, problem-solving, and continual improvement.

Customer Focus & Product Quality

  • Ensure customer requirements, specifications, and contracts are reviewed and flowed down properly.
  • Ensure test records completed by Laboratory Technicians are accurate, technically correct, and professional for presentation to customers via the completed test record packets supplied to each customer.
  • Conduct root-cause actions for internal and customer-reported issues.
  • Ensure full and complete test documentation and organized maintenance of test records.
  • Communicate customer quality metrics and improvement progress at management reviews

Safety Controls

  • Maintain and provide a safe operating environment for Laboratory and non-laboratory personnel due to equipment hazards and chemical hazards This includes all Procedures and emergency recovery procedures, and training in their implementation.
  • Ensure that spill hazards and environmental hazards controls, signage, and protective equipment is both available and accessible in anticipation of any possible events.
  • Maintain supply of PPE and all protective gear and correct any shortages.

Internal Audit & Compliance

  • Conduct the internal audit programs covering all AS9100 clauses as requested.
  • Track findings, verify corrective actions, and ensure timely closure.

Process Control & Continuous Improvement

  • Monitor and document key quality metrics.
  • Process input from Technicians for any process or equipment improvements as needed.
  • Participate in Kaizen or process-improvement events related to quality and compliance.
  • Partner with Operations and Engineering to ensure process capability and control.

Calibration & Equipment Control

  • Ensure all monitoring and measuring devices are calibrated and traceable per AS9100 7.1.5.
  • Maintain the original copies of calibration certificates for Laboratory equipment and instruments.
  • Verify calibration awareness among Laboratory personnel.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgy, Materials Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering with a strong Materials’ applications experience, or related technical discipline is required. Advanced degree or Level III NDE is a strong asset.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in materials applications (metals) within aerospace, defense, or precision manufacturing.
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in mechanical assembly, metal fabrication, tooling, or mechanical testing.
  • Ability to lift approximately 50 lb. test handling devices.
  • Knowledge and experience with industrial chemicals or acids, and the willingness to work with them.
  • Knowledge and experience with microscopic examination of metals and forensic failure modes analysis is needed.
  • Proficient in MS Word, Microsoft Excel, and general computer programs for various laboratory applications.
  • Good communication, mechanical, and analytical skills.
