What is a Contract Developer job?

A Contract Developer is a software developer hired on a temporary or project basis to create, modify, or maintain applications and systems. They typically work for clients or companies under a contract agreement rather than as a full-time employee. Their responsibilities may include coding, debugging, testing, and collaborating with teams to meet project requirements. Contract Developers often specialize in specific programming languages or technologies and may work remotely or on-site. The duration and terms of their work vary based on the contract and project scope.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Contract Developer position, and why are they important?

To excel as a Contract Developer, strong programming skills, experience with relevant frameworks, and a solid educational background in computer science or related fields are essential. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, project management tools, and possibly certifications such as AWS Certified Developer or Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer Associate are advantageous. Excellent time management, client communication, and adaptability are critical soft skills for success in contract-based work. These skills enable a Contract Developer to efficiently deliver quality results, meet client expectations, and thrive in dynamic, project-oriented environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Contract Developers and how can they be managed?

Contract Developers often work on multiple projects or with various clients, which can present challenges such as rapidly adapting to different codebases, meeting tight deadlines, and managing shifting priorities. Effective communication with stakeholders and clear agreement on project scope and deliverables can help minimize misunderstandings. Staying organized through productivity tools and maintaining continuous skills development also contribute to handling workload fluctuations. By proactively addressing these challenges, contract developers can deliver high-quality work and build strong professional relationships.

Job description

If you love seeing your electrical designs come to life in real facilities—and want to work on projects that keep large-scale manufacturing running—this role is for you. We’re looking for an Electrical Construction Project Engineer who can partner with engineering and construction teams to deliver medium- and low-voltage electrical projects across multiple plant locations.

You’ll play a key role in supporting building construction, facility upgrades, and utility modifications for active industrial sites. From concept to commissioning, you’ll help bring projects online safely, efficiently, and on schedule.

Job Title: Electrical Engineer - Capital Projects

Location: Fort Wayne, IN

Pay: $46/hr to $55/hr (Depending on Experience)

Type: Long term contract with possibility of Contract To Hire

What You Will Be Doing

You’ll own the electrical portion of projects from early planning through final startup and closeout. Expect a mix of engineering coordination, project management, and boots-on-the-ground construction oversight.

Day-to-day highlights:

  • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to define project scope and specs

  • Support electrical design studies for facility and process utilities

  • Coordinate detailed design packages with consulting engineering firms

  • Manage procurement of electrical equipment and materials

  • Oversee construction execution, including:

    • Cost and timeline estimates

    • Final design coordination

    • Bidding and contractor selection

    • Contract and change management

    • Installation, commissioning, and startup

    • Final documentation and project closeout

  • Help coordinate other trades on-site as needed (mechanical, civil, etc.)

  • Support plant shutdowns and major installations when required

Technical Environment

You’ll support large-scale manufacturing facilities that include:

  • Medium & low voltage power systems

  • Extruders, conveyors, presses, and automated systems

  • Robotics (Fanuc and others), AGVs, and vision systems

  • PLCs, HMIs, and industrial control systems

  • Utility and facility infrastructure upgrades

If you enjoy working where engineering meets real-world production, you’ll thrive here.

Must-Have Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent technical experience

  • Strong knowledge of NEC, electrical design standards, and NFPA 70E

  • Experience coordinating or managing projects in industrial manufacturing or construction

  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills

Nice To Have Qualifications
  • 3–5 years in consulting engineering (electrical focus)

  • 3–5 years in construction project/site management

  • Experience supporting active manufacturing facilities

Schedule and Travel
  • Standard 40-hour workweek (Mon–Fri)

  • Occasional weekend/holiday work for plant shutdowns or startups

  • Travel up to 30% across North America

  • Overtime possible but not typical

If you’re an electrical engineer who enjoys managing projects, working cross-functionally, and seeing your work come to life in real facilities, we’d love to connect.

Apply today and help power the next generation of industrial manufacturing projects.
