What does a Configuration Engineer do?

A Configuration Engineer is responsible for managing and maintaining the configuration of systems, products, or software throughout their lifecycle. They ensure that all configuration items are identified, documented, and controlled, which helps maintain system integrity and traceability. Their work often involves collaborating with design, development, and operations teams to implement changes, resolve issues, and ensure compliance with industry standards. Configuration Engineers play a key role in quality assurance and in preventing unauthorized changes to critical systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Configuration Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Configuration Engineer, you need a solid background in systems engineering, configuration management principles, and a relevant technical degree. Familiarity with tools like Git, Jenkins, Ansible, and configuration management databases (CMDBs), as well as certifications such as ITIL or CMII, are commonly required. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills set exceptional candidates apart. These abilities ensure accurate system configurations, efficient change management, and reliable collaboration across technical teams.

What is the difference between Configuration Engineer vs Network Engineer?

AspectConfiguration EngineerNetwork Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, certifications like Cisco CCNA or CompTIA Network+Bachelor's in Computer Science or related, certifications like Cisco CCNA or CCNP
Work EnvironmentDesigning, implementing, and maintaining system configurations in IT or manufacturing settingsDesigning, deploying, and managing network infrastructure and connectivity
Employer & Industry UsageIT companies, manufacturing, automation industriesTelecommunications, IT service providers, large enterprises

While both roles require networking knowledge and certifications like Cisco CCNA, Configuration Engineers focus on system setup, software configurations, and automation processes. Network Engineers primarily manage network infrastructure, ensuring connectivity and security. The roles often overlap in networking skills but differ in their core focus areas and work environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Configuration Engineers when managing multiple software environments?

Configuration Engineers often work with multiple development, testing, and production environments, each with its own requirements and constraints. One common challenge is keeping environment configurations consistent while adapting to frequent updates and changes, which can lead to configuration drift if not carefully managed. Effective communication with development, QA, and operations teams is essential to ensure changes are documented and deployed correctly. Utilizing automation tools and version control systems can greatly help in tracking changes and maintaining stability across environments.

Job description

Network Design & Configuration Engineer We are partnering with an innovative aerospace company developing next-generation autonomous aircraft and the supporting technologies that will enable safe and scalable Urban Air Mobility. As they continue to grow, they are looking for talented engineers to help shape the future of flight. We are seeking a Network Design & Configuration Engineer to design and support high-availability networks for our Remote Supervision Segment (RSS). Working closely with systems engineers, integrators, software engineers, and developers, you will define network architectures, installation designs, equipment layouts, and facility requirements to support the safe operation of autonomous aircraft in an Urban Air Mobility (UAM) environment. What You'll Do: Validate ground system network designs and develop detailed architecture specifications. Define and implement high-availability, resilience, and observability requirements across ground and supplier-integrated systems. Design, build, and manage network environments for integration labs and prototype testing. Configure and maintain routing, switching, and firewall policies to support lab operations and SATCOM testing. Ensure supplier network architectures and requirements align with industry safety and development assurance standards (e.g., ARP4754B). Develop return-to-service procedures, service interface agreements, and operational documentation. Support the integration, testing, and deployment of ground systems. Create installation designs, equipment layouts, operator procedures, and configuration documentation throughout the development lifecycle. Requirements: 8+ years of experience designing, implementing, and supporting production network environments. Strong expertise in high-availability and fault-tolerant network architectures. Hands-on experience with routing, switching, and firewall configuration and management. Experience supporting integration labs, prototype environments, or system test networks. Strong routing and switching expertise, preferably with Juniper platforms. Deep understanding of BGP, OSPF, EVPN-VXLAN, and MPLS technologies. Experience designing and supporting multi-site and partner-connected network ecosystems. Excellent configuration management, troubleshooting, and technical documentation skills. Preferred Qualifications: Experience in aerospace, aviation, or other safety-critical environments. Knowledge of supplier-integrated network architectures and third-party system integration. Experience with network automation, monitoring, and observability platforms. Familiarity with SATCOM, test-range, or mission-critical connectivity environments. Who you are: A self-motivated and proactive engineer who thrives on solving complex technical challenges. Analytical and solution-oriented, with a strong attention to detail. An effective communicator who can adapt technical information to a variety of audiences. Adaptable and comfortable working in fast-paced, evolving environments with changing priorities. A collaborative team player who builds strong working relationships across disciplines. Ready to help shape the networks behind the next generation of autonomous aircraft? Apply today.
