What does a Configuration Engineer do?

A Configuration Engineer is responsible for managing and maintaining the configuration of systems, products, or software throughout their lifecycle. They ensure that all configuration items are identified, documented, and controlled, which helps maintain system integrity and traceability. Their work often involves collaborating with design, development, and operations teams to implement changes, resolve issues, and ensure compliance with industry standards. Configuration Engineers play a key role in quality assurance and in preventing unauthorized changes to critical systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Configuration Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Configuration Engineer, you need a solid background in systems engineering, configuration management principles, and a relevant technical degree. Familiarity with tools like Git, Jenkins, Ansible, and configuration management databases (CMDBs), as well as certifications such as ITIL or CMII, are commonly required. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication skills set exceptional candidates apart. These abilities ensure accurate system configurations, efficient change management, and reliable collaboration across technical teams.

What is the difference between Configuration Engineer vs Network Engineer?

AspectConfiguration EngineerNetwork Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, certifications like Cisco CCNA or CompTIA Network+Bachelor's in Computer Science or related, certifications like Cisco CCNA or CCNP
Work EnvironmentDesigning, implementing, and maintaining system configurations in IT or manufacturing settingsDesigning, deploying, and managing network infrastructure and connectivity
Employer & Industry UsageIT companies, manufacturing, automation industriesTelecommunications, IT service providers, large enterprises

While both roles require networking knowledge and certifications like Cisco CCNA, Configuration Engineers focus on system setup, software configurations, and automation processes. Network Engineers primarily manage network infrastructure, ensuring connectivity and security. The roles often overlap in networking skills but differ in their core focus areas and work environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Configuration Engineers when managing multiple software environments?

Configuration Engineers often work with multiple development, testing, and production environments, each with its own requirements and constraints. One common challenge is keeping environment configurations consistent while adapting to frequent updates and changes, which can lead to configuration drift if not carefully managed. Effective communication with development, QA, and operations teams is essential to ensure changes are documented and deployed correctly. Utilizing automation tools and version control systems can greatly help in tracking changes and maintaining stability across environments.

Job description

Description

We are seeking a Jama Developer / Configurator to support a high-performing Digital Engineering team focused on delivering requirements management and systems engineering solutions for a Department of Defense (DoD) customer. This role is ideal for someone who understands both the technical configuration of requirements management tools and the acquisition processes that drive defense programs.

Rather than serving as a traditional software developer, this individual will act as a process and workflow architect, partnering directly with stakeholders to understand requirements, map acquisition and engineering workflows, and translate them into scalable solutions within Jama, Jira, and Cameo environments.

The successful candidate will help design, configure, and integrate requirements, verification, traceability, and program management workflows that support the full lifecycle of DoD acquisition and systems engineering activities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Configure and administer Jama Connect to support requirements management, verification, validation, traceability, and configuration management processes.
  • Partner with government and contractor stakeholders to elicit requirements and document current-state and future-state workflows.
  • Design and implement customized workflows, dashboards, reports, and metrics within Jama and integrated toolsets.
  • Support integration efforts between Jama, Jira, Cameo, and other engineering tools to establish end-to-end digital engineering and requirements traceability solutions.
  • Develop and maintain requirements data structures, relationship rules, review workflows, and approval processes.
  • Create dashboards and reporting capabilities that provide visibility into program requirements, engineering progress, risks, and compliance metrics.
  • Utilize scripting, APIs, SQL queries, and automation capabilities to improve efficiency and reduce manual processes.
  • Assist program teams in establishing best practices for requirements management, systems engineering, and digital engineering environments.
  • Work closely with acquisition, systems engineering, program management, and operations personnel to align tool configurations with mission objectives.
  • Support data migration, integration, and synchronization activities across enterprise engineering platforms.
  • Provide user training, documentation, and process guidance for Jama and associated digital engineering tools.
  • Recommend process improvements and workflow enhancements that increase program visibility, traceability, and compliance.
Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience administering, configuring, or developing solutions within Jama Connect.
  • Experience gathering customer requirements and translating business processes into tool configurations and automated workflows.
  • Strong understanding of requirements lifecycle management, traceability, verification, and validation processes.
  • Experience integrating Jama with external applications such as Jira, Cameo, ServiceNow, or other engineering and program management tools.
  • Experience utilizing APIs, scripting, SQL, or automation frameworks to extend platform capabilities.
  • Ability to create custom dashboards, reports, filters, metrics, and workflow configurations.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to facilitate requirements elicitation sessions.
  • Experience supporting Agile, SAFe, Systems Engineering, or Digital Engineering environments.
  • Experience working directly with clients in a consulting, systems engineering, or program support capacity.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and process-improvement skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Jama Connect Administration or Advanced Configuration.
  • Experience with Jira, Jira Service Management, and Confluence administration and integration.
  • Experience with Cameo Systems Modeler (MagicDraw) and MBSE environments.
  • Knowledge of REST APIs, SQL, HTML, JavaScript, Python, or Java.
  • Understanding of Digital Engineering concepts, Digital Thread, and Digital Twin initiatives.
  • Experience supporting DoD System Program Offices (SPOs) or Program Management Offices (PMOs).
  • Working knowledge of:
    • DoD Acquisition Lifecycle
    • Adaptive Acquisition Framework (AAF)
    • Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR)
    • Integrated Master Schedules (IMS)
    • Risk, Issue, and Opportunity (RIO) Management
    • Work Breakdown Structures (WBS)
    • Statements of Work (SOW)
    • Earned Value Management (EVM)
    • Technical Baselines and Configuration Management
  • Experience with full lifecycle acquisition support from requirements development through sustainment.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related discipline (experience may substitute for a degree).
Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate combines expertise in Jama Connect, Jira, and Cameo with a strong understanding of DoD acquisition and systems engineering processes. This individual can work directly with customers to capture requirements, improve workflows, establish traceability, and implement digital engineering solutions that support mission-critical programs.

Success in this role requires the ability to bridge the gap between systems engineering, program management, acquisition teams, and technical tool implementation while delivering scalable, efficient, and compliant requirements management solutions.
