Overview & Job Duties
The CDI Communications Assistant works to reach the CDI target audiences with thoughtfully crafted messaging through a monthly newsletter distributed to district commissioners, assistant commissioners, local office staff and state and federal partners, as well as regular activity on social media, developing relevant and engaging content for the CDI website and designing communication pieces for both print and online distribution.
Duties: 
  • Connections newsletter – Assists the Executive Director writing, preparing and disseminating the CDI monthly Connections newsletter. This involves finding interesting conservation-related news from all around the state of Iowa and writing articles for the newsletter. 
  • Social Media – Assists the Executive Director in maintaining a presence for CDI on social media platforms including Facebook. This will include sharing articles and photos on a regular basis to keep social media sites interesting and fresh.
  • CDI Website – Assists the Executive Director and Program Coordinator in maintaining and updating the CDI website. This includes regularly checking for out-of-date information and keeping all postings updated. 
  • Horizon II – Advancing Markets for Producers Initiative – Communicates directly with commissioners and interested parties to promote Horizon II program goals. Reports to CDI Executive Director regularly with program updates.
  • Email list management – Takes the lead role in maintaining CDI’s email contact lists. This involves regularly updating with new email addresses and removing old and non-functioning addresses.
  • Press contact management – Takes the lead role in developing a list of press contacts and sends out press releases to achieve maximum statewide coverage.
  • CDI promotion at events – Participates in promoting CDI with booths or tables at various events.
  • CDI Annual Conference – Assists the Executive Director with promotion and execution of the CDI Annual Conference, including event coverage and photography. Annual Conference tasks assigned by the CDI Executive Director.
  • In-office work hours are Monday-Friday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with some travel and coverage of events.
  • Participates in regular in-office staff meetings as scheduled by CDI Executive Director. Other duties as assigned by the CDI Executive Director.
Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with the Executive Director, CDI partners and CDI program employees.
  • Familiarity with/interest in agriculture and soil & water conservation.
  • Ability to work independently with little supervision and with diverse clientele.
  • Ability to maintain and manage a rapidly changing schedule with fast-paced completion of work.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication.
  • Proficiency with computer software programs such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, Wordpress and other communications software.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to conduct on-site outreach and engaging with diverse audiences.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle required.
