Job Details
Coastal Carolina University's University Marketing and Communication team is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented student communication assistant to support institutional storytelling, media relations, and strategic marketing and communications efforts. This position provides hands-on experience in higher education communications while working alongside professionals to share the stories, achievements, and impact of the Coastal Carolina University community.
The student communications assistant will assist with developing content for a variety of communications channels, including news releases, website content, social media platforms, newsletters, and university publications. The ideal candidate is a strong writer and communicator who can identify compelling stories, conduct interviews, translate complex information into engaging content, and effectively communicate with a variety of audiences.
Responsibilities may include:
  • Assist with media relations efforts, including researching story opportunities, preparing media materials, monitoring media coverage, and supporting responses to media inquiries.
  • Write and edit content for a variety of platforms, including:
    • University news releases
    • Website stories and feature articles
    • Social media captions and campaigns
    • Internal communications
    • University publications and newsletters
  • Conduct interviews with students, faculty, staff, and university partners to develop engaging stories highlighting campus achievements and initiatives.
  • Assist with gathering information, fact-checking, and proofreading communications materials.
  • Support University events, initiatives, and strategic priorities.
  • Help identify opportunities to showcase student success, faculty accomplishments, research, community engagement, and campus experiences.
  • Collaborate with members of the University Marketing and Communication team on special projects and campaigns.
  • Perform administrative and support tasks as needed.
  • Perform other marketing and communication-related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • Current Coastal Carolina University student in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, English, or a related field.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to produce accurate, polished content.
  • Ability to adapt writing style for different audiences and communication channels.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with a team.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience writing for publications, websites, student media, blogs, newsletters, or social media platforms.
  • Experience conducting interviews and developing feature stories.
  • Familiarity with AP Style.
  • Experience with social media content creation and digital storytelling.
  • Interest in higher education, public relations, journalism, or strategic communications.
