Are commission-only sales jobs worth it?

Commission-only sales jobs can offer high earning potential based on performance, but income can be unpredictable and depends on sales success. They often require strong sales skills, self-motivation, and resilience, as there is no guaranteed salary or benefits. These roles are suitable for individuals comfortable with variable income and proactive in generating leads and closing deals.

How do commission only sales jobs work?

Commission only sales jobs pay employees solely based on the sales they generate, with no fixed salary. Workers typically earn a percentage of each sale, which can motivate high performance but also result in variable income. Success in these roles often requires strong sales skills, self-motivation, and the ability to manage income fluctuations.

What is a commission only sales job?

A Commission Only Sales job is a role where your earnings are based entirely on the sales you generate. Instead of receiving a fixed salary, you earn a percentage of each sale you make. This type of position can offer high earning potential, but income is not guaranteed. It requires strong sales skills, motivation, and the ability to work independently. Many commission-only roles provide flexibility and the opportunity for unlimited income based on performance.

What can I expect from the compensation structure and earning potential in a commission only sales position?

In a Commission Only Sales position, your earnings are based entirely on the sales you generate, meaning there is no set base salary. This structure offers high earning potential for driven individuals who excel in closing deals, as commissions can be uncapped. Many companies provide tiered or escalating commission rates to further reward top performers. While this role may involve higher risk compared to salaried sales positions, it can also provide greater flexibility and income growth for those who thrive in a results-oriented environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a commission only sales position, and why are they important?

To excel in a Commission Only Sales role, you need strong sales acumen, persuasive communication skills, and a track record of meeting or exceeding sales targets, often supported by previous sales experience. Familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) software and digital sales platforms is typically essential. Motivation, resilience, and the ability to build rapport quickly are standout soft skills in this position. These qualities are crucial because income is directly tied to performance, making self-drive and effective client engagement vital for success.

How to find commission-only salespeople?

To find commission-only salespeople, employers can post job listings on specialized sales job boards, use social media platforms like LinkedIn, or engage with staffing agencies that focus on sales roles. Clearly outlining commission structures and required sales skills helps attract qualified candidates. Networking and referrals from industry contacts also effectively identify experienced commission-based sales professionals.

Job description

Commission-Only Sales Representative (1099) | Mobile Heavy- & Medium-Duty Truck Repair | Roanoke, TX

Earn 10–15% of ALL revenue — new AND repeat — for every account you land.

DuraFleet Fort Worth keeps commercial fleets on the road with onsite, mobile maintenance and repair. We specialize in heavy and medium-duty trucks, and service light-duty and any other vehicle a fleet runs, coming directly to the customer so their equipment never sits idle in a shop. Businesses that depend on trucks (trucking and freight, construction, oilfield, delivery, towing, municipal, and the trades) need this, and they need it on repeat.

We're looking for a driven, self-motivated sales rep who knows how to open doors and build relationships. This is a 1099, commission-only role and here's what makes it different: you don't just get paid once. You earn a tiered commission of 10% to 15% on the total monthly revenue of every account you sign, for as long as they stay a customer. New work, repeat work, ongoing service; if it's your account, you get paid on it.

Land a handful of solid fleet accounts and you build a recurring income stream that pays you month after month.

What you'll do

  • Prospect and sign up local businesses that operate vehicle fleets
  • Target fleets running heavy and medium-duty trucks, where downtime is expensive and recurring maintenance is a must
  • Build relationships with fleet managers, owners, and operations leads
  • Present the value of onsite/mobile service: less downtime, no shop trips, predictable upkeep
  • Own your book of business and grow it

What we're looking for

  • Proven B2B or outside sales experience (fleet, trucking, automotive, or service industry a big plus)
  • A self-starter who's comfortable working independently and setting their own schedule
  • Strong communicator who can build trust with business owners
  • Existing relationships with trucking, freight, construction, oilfield, or delivery fleets are a major advantage
  • Reliable transportation and a valid driver's license

Compensation

  • 1099 independent contractor, commission-only
  • Tiered 10–15% commission based on the monthly revenue of your accounts
  • Paid on both new and repeat revenue — real residual income
  • Uncapped earning potential; you control your income
  • Flexible schedule — you set your own hours and territory
