Overview
This position supports the Cardiologist in performing a wide range of diagnostic and interventional cardiac procedures, including cardiac catheterizations, Swan-Ganz catheterization, pacemaker procedures, transesophageal echocardiography with cardioversion (TEE/CV), intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) support, percutaneous coronary interventions, and other minor procedures requiring the administration of moderate sedation. The role is responsible for operating, monitoring, and maintaining specialized equipment used within the cardiac catheterization laboratory.
The position provides direct patient care using established radiological, cardiovascular, and technical knowledge, in accordance with Delaware licensure or certification requirements. Care is delivered across the full spectrum of patient populations, requiring the clinical skills, judgment, and adaptability necessary to ensure safe, high-quality patient outcomes in a dynamic procedural environment.
Responsibilities
Clinical & Procedural Support
  • Assists the physician with scrub duties using strict sterile technique to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Sets up sterile trays and prepares and positions patients for procedures.
  • Assists the physician in the circulator role, including patient positioning for digital imaging and administering medications or contrast (if RN/RT certified) under physician supervision and in accordance with departmental policy.
  • Performs recorder/monitor functions, including documenting procedures, balancing and calibrating equipment, operating physiologic recorders, and calculating and reporting patient data obtained in the cardiac catheterization laboratory.
Equipment & Technical Expertise
  • Demonstrates complete working knowledge of all equipment within the cardiac catheterization laboratory.
  • Operates and maintains physiologic monitoring systems and imaging equipment according to departmental standards.
Patient Care & Safety
  • Reviews patient charts to identify pertinent clinical information and indicators of potential patient risk prior to procedures.
  • Maintains the holding area and assists with safe transport of patients before and after procedures.
  • Provides radiation protection to patients, staff, and self in accordance with established safety regulations and best practices.
  • Recognizes emergency situations and initiates appropriate response, including activating code procedures and administering first aid or CPR as needed.
Medication & Contrast Administration
  • Prepares and administers contrast media and medications under the direct supervision of the Cardiologist.
  • Maintains controlled drug inventory according to established controlled substance policies.
  • Ensures crash cart and drug boxes are accurately stocked, secured, and properly dated.
Inventory & Supply Management
  • Assists in maintaining supply inventory and ordering necessary items to support procedural needs.
  • Notifies the coordinator when supplies are low or need replenishment.
  • Actively participates in product evaluation to identify high-quality, cost-effective supplies and equipment.
Documentation & Follow-Up
  • Maintains a daily work log reflecting procedural activity and responsibilities.
  • Participates in patient follow-up activities as required by departmental protocols.
Operations & Quality Improvement
  • Rotates in an on-call schedule to support emergency and after-hours procedural needs.
  • Actively participates in performance improvement initiatives, including evaluation, reporting outcomes, and recommending follow-up actions to enhance patient care and department efficiency.

Qualifications
  • Ability to communicate effectively, pleasantly, cooperatively, and discreetly with patients, physicians, team members, and the general public.
  • Demonstrates excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills and the ability to work well with individuals from diverse backgrounds, levels of training, and experiences.
  • Able to work efficiently under pressure while maintaining professionalism and strict patient confidentiality.
  • Exhibits creativity, initiative, and strong problem-solving skills when responding to clinical or operational challenges.
  • Must be licensed with the State of Delaware, Radiation License in order to use fluoroscopy
  • Required - Cardiovascular Technician (CVT)
