About Amphenol Fiber Systems International

Amphenol Fiber Systems International (AFSI), based in Allen, Texas, is a leading manufacturer of harsh-environment fiber optic connectivity products serving the military, telecommunications, and industrial markets worldwide. Since 1993, AFSI has built a reputation for delivering reliable, high-performance fiber optic systems engineered to operate in the toughest conditions.

Our Mission

Our mission is to be the world’s most advanced harsh environment fiber optic company by building a culture where curiosity is core, teamwork is fostered, continuous improvement is routine, and attention to detail defines our success.

About the Role

The Cable Harness Engineer is responsible for the design and development of fiber optic cable harnesses and assemblies for standard and custom applications. This role focuses primarily on cable harness design, routing, layout, and documentation while also supporting limited per-project custom component design as needed. The position works closely with component engineering, sales, manufacturing, and customers to deliver high-quality, manufacturable designs that meet technical and performance requirements.

What You'll Do

  • Design and develop cable harness layouts, assemblies, routing schemes, and detail drawings for fiber optic cable assemblies and related harness products based on customer input, sales requirements, and internal specifications.
  • Create and maintain 3D models and 2D drawings in SolidWorks and related tools, including connector interfaces, strain relief features, transitions, overmolding, and routing details.
  • Conceptualize design solutions in response to stated requirements and develop practical, manufacturable design concepts.
  • Perform tolerance analysis and design reviews to support fit, function, manufacturability, and compliance with applicable standards.
  • Work with component engineering to obtain, define, or develop models for AFSI connectors, products, and limited custom components.
  • Model interfaces, purchased components, and application-specific components as required.
  • Review manufacturer catalogs, technical guides, and other reference materials to obtain dimensional, tolerance, and drafting information.
  • Analyze design requirements and recommend alternate constructions, design improvements, or corrective actions.
  • Initiate engineering change notices and support design revisions for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Partner with manufacturing engineering and operations to ensure drawings, bills of material, notes, and instructions are sufficient for manufacturability.
  • Support new product testing by preparing assemblies, documentation, and related design outputs.
  • Resolve design-related issues related to performance, producibility, and product delivery.
  • Support supplier development efforts to help ensure component availability and continuity of supply.
  • Participate in material review board activities as needed for nonconforming material.
  • Communicate effectively with engineering, manufacturing, suppliers, and customers to support project execution and issue resolution.

What We're Looking For

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, preferably Mechanical or Electrical, or a related technical discipline.
  • 2–5 years of experience in cable harness design, cable assembly drafting, or mechanical design.
  • U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident status required to satisfy ITAR requirements.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply engineering drawings, blueprints, assembly drawings, and customer/internal specifications.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks, including 3D modeling of assemblies and components and development of detailed 2D drawings.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Visio, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a cross-functional team environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Solid understanding of cable harness design principles, including routing, connector selection, strain relief, bundling, shielding, and environmental considerations.
  • Strong customer service mindset and professional demeanor.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in fiber optic product design or related connectivity products.
  • Experience with overmolding, sealed connectors, environmental qualification, or harsh-environment assemblies.
  • Familiarity with ERP systems, part setup, and engineering change processes.
  • Experience working with suppliers and component sourcing.
  • Knowledge of GD&T, tolerance stack-up, and product release processes.
