Your role in helping us shape the future:
U.S. News empowers everyone to thrive. In this position you will have the opportunity to leverage your strengths and skills to drive strategic expansion, deepening customer engagement, and strengthening the company's competitive position. The Director helps to shape acquisition or investment pathways, identifies emerging needs, and informs solution development that aligns with our mission.
This role works with the cross-functional team (for example, general managers, product managers, engineers / tech, marketing, finance, human resources, and legal) to facilitate the implementation of deals for Health, Law Firms, Investment & Corporate Development and other projects.
Are you up to the challenge?
Strategic Growth
  • Develop and implement growth strategies aligned to U.S. News's mission priorities in Health, Investment & Corporate Development, Law Firms, Scholarship Database and other business areas.
  • Support the development of targeted marketing materials, white papers, and mission-aligned demonstrations to communicate U.S. News's capabilities effectively

Health
  • Partner with the EVP, & GM, Health to source, structure and negotiate health business development transactions. Responsibilities include:
    • Engage with the Health vertical's customers and other relevant stakeholders to identify mission needs, shape outreach to potential partners and determine technical and operational requirements.
    • Reach out to potential business development prospects and screen them for suitability.
    • For suitable prospects, onboard (for example, NDAs), conduct business diligence and gather information.
    • For prospects that meet requirements, structure and negotiate agreements.

Investment & Corporate Development
  • Partner with the Chief Financial & Operating Officer to identify, qualify, and mature large-scale business development opportunities with strategic partners, building a robust, strategically aligned pipeline. Responsibilities include:
    • Structure and negotiate business development transactions
    • Proactively engage customers and relevant stakeholders to identify mission needs, shape acquisition strategies, and influence technical and operational requirements
    • Understand customer acquisition buying patterns, acquisition vehicles, and procurement processes and timelines to position the company advantageously

Law Firms
  • Partner with Data, Editorial, Tech and other teams to create a best-in-class ranking/rating of top law firms, Responsibilities include:
    • Perform competitive review of other law firm rating systems and opportunities for U.S. News to fill gaps not currently served by other systems.
    • Participate in market research, including interviews with marketing officers at major law firms and with general counsel..
    • Assist data team with the identification and acquisition of data, and negotiation where necessary with data source.
    • Provide input and feedback to the data team.
    • Work with the product team to develop ranking/rating pages and profile pages.
    • Work on socialization, distribution, and marketing of the ultimate product.

Cross-Functional Integration & Internal/External Alignment
  • Build and strengthen relationships with industry partners who provide value to our Health and other business areas
  • Support internal investments aligned to U.S. News's mission needs and future acquisition trends
  • Collaborate with data, editorial, tech and legal teams to move projects forward.

Position Requirements
You should definitely have:
  • Bachelor's degree in a business-related or other related discipline or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 8 years of proven experience in business development, sales, or a related field
  • Ability to manage multiple executive sponsors of the different projects that you are managing.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills, with the ability to effectively engage with customers, partners, competitors, and internal stakeholders
  • Strong analytical and research skills, with the ability to gather and analyze market intelligence and competitive data
  • Ability to think strategically and develop long-term plans that drive growth and revenue
  • Experience working collaboratively with cross-functional teams, including sales, marketing, finance, and technical teams
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills with experience presenting to senior executives and external stakeholders
  • Attention to detail and relentless follow-through on actions
