Position Information
DEFINITION
Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of skilled and semi-skilled work in the repair and maintenance of buildings, equipment and facility systems including secure facilities requiring background check and clearance, and does other related work as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is the full working level in the Building Maintenance series requiring considerable skill in the installation, repair and maintenance of County facilities and equipment Work assignments are usually performed without continuous supervision, and are generally inspected upon completion.
The class of Building Maintenance Worker is distinguished from the next higher level of Senior Building Maintenance Worker which functions as the advanced working level/lead worker in the Building Maintenance Worker series.
Examples of Duties

  1. Performs skilled and semiskilled carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting and other general installation, maintenance and repair tasks of both regularly scheduled and emergency service requests
  2. Performs and assists with repairs and maintenance of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment; performs routine maintenance on mechanical equipment such as lubricating, cleaning, and replacing worn or defective parts
  3. Makes routine maintenance checks on buildings and equipment and identifies needed repairs; may estimate the requirements to perform repairs; keeps records of work
  4. Maintains accurate and legible records of service requests performed, and timecard reporting
  5. Applies proper work procedures and safety practices commonly used in maintenance work
  6. May operate and maintain boilers and other heating, ventilating and building equipment
  7. May assist skilled workers in complex carpentry painting, electrical, masonry or refrigeration, heating and ventilation work
  8. May perform repair and maintenance on lock and key mechanisms on doors, desks, cabinets and other devices; provides emergency repair services; issue keys and maintain record of issuance and returns; maintain inventory of keys, key stocks and related locksmith material and equipment.
