As a breastfeeding educator, you teach lactation classes to breastfeeding mothers and their babies and provide clinical care, counsel, and support to mothers, medical staff, and related community groups. You develop and implement a family-centered approach to assist families as early as preconception all the way through weaning, helping each mother achieve their breastfeeding goals. You also provide advice and answer questions regarding newborn babies. Additional duties include offering patient care with complex and multiple-problem situations, where you identify the issues and help solve them in a calm and caring fashion. You act as a mentor and instructor to other healthcare professionals in clinics and community settings. Other responsibilities include continuing your professional development throughout your career.
