What is a BOH (Back of House) restaurant job?

BOH (Back of House) restaurant jobs refer to the positions that operate behind the scenes in a restaurant, out of view from customers. These roles include chefs, cooks, dishwashers, prep cooks, and kitchen managers, who are responsible for food preparation, cooking, cleaning, and maintaining kitchen safety and organization. The BOH team works together to ensure that meals are prepared correctly, safely, and efficiently before being served to guests. These positions are essential for the smooth operation of any restaurant, supporting the front of house staff and overall customer satisfaction.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a BOH (Back of House) restaurant worker?

To thrive as a BOH restaurant worker, you need strong culinary skills, attention to food safety, and experience with kitchen operations, often supported by a food handler’s permit or certification. Familiarity with commercial kitchen equipment, inventory management systems, and adherence to standardized recipes is important. Effective teamwork, time management, and the ability to work efficiently under pressure are crucial soft skills. These skills ensure high-quality food preparation, safety, and smooth kitchen operations in a fast-paced restaurant environment.
