What is bioprocess development?

Bioprocess development is the process of designing, optimizing, and scaling up methods to produce biological products such as vaccines, antibodies, enzymes, or biofuels using living cells or their components. This field involves activities like selecting the best microorganisms or cell lines, optimizing growth conditions, and developing purification steps to ensure product quality and quantity. Bioprocess development is essential in industries like pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and agriculture for bringing laboratory discoveries into commercial-scale production. Professionals in this area work closely with research scientists and engineers to translate lab-scale processes into manufacturing protocols. The ultimate goal is to create efficient, cost-effective, and reproducible production methods for biologics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Bioprocess Development, and why are they important?

To thrive in Bioprocess Development, you need a strong background in biology, chemistry, and process engineering, typically supported by a degree in biotechnology, biochemical engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with bioreactors, cell culture techniques, analytical instrumentation, and regulatory standards such as GMP is essential. Critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective collaboration are vital soft skills for optimizing processes and addressing complex production challenges. These skills ensure efficient scale-up, quality control, and innovation in the development of biologics and other bioproducts.

What are some typical challenges faced in a Bioprocess Development role, and how are they addressed?

Professionals in Bioprocess Development often encounter challenges such as optimizing process parameters for scalability, maintaining product consistency, and troubleshooting unexpected variability during production runs. To address these, teams rely on rigorous experimental design, data analysis, and close collaboration with upstream and downstream processing teams. Effective communication and adaptability are crucial, as protocols may need rapid adjustment in response to new findings or regulatory requirements. Continual learning and cross-functional teamwork are key to overcoming these challenges and ensuring successful process development.

What is the difference between Bioprocess Development vs Bioprocess Manufacturing?

AspectBioprocess DevelopmentBioprocess Manufacturing
CredentialsDegree in Biotechnology, Bioengineering, or related fieldsSimilar credentials, often with additional certifications in GMP or quality assurance
Work EnvironmentLaboratory and pilot plant settings focused on process design and optimizationProduction facilities focused on large-scale manufacturing
Industry UsageEarly-stage process design, scale-up, and validationLarge-scale production, process execution, and quality control

Bioprocess Development focuses on designing and optimizing processes in labs and pilot plants, while Bioprocess Manufacturing involves large-scale production and process execution. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds but differ in their focus and work environment.

Job description

COMPANY DESCRIPTION

Flagship Pioneering is a platform innovation company that invents and builds companies that change the world. We bring together the greatest scientific minds with entrepreneurial company builders and assemble the capital to allow them to take courageous leaps. Those big leaps in human health, sustainability and beyond exponentially accelerate scientific progress in areas ranging from disease detection and treatment and nature-positive agriculture to novel applications of AI that are driving the creation of new technologies.

What sets Flagship apart is our ability to advance science and technology by uniting innovation, company creation, and capital investment under one roof in a way that is largely without precedent. Our scientific founders, entrepreneurial leaders, and professional capital managers are each aligned around an institutionalized process that enables us to innovate and transform for the benefit of people and planet.

Many of the companies Flagship has founded have addressed humanity's most urgent challenges: vaccinating billions of people against COVID-19, curing intractable diseases, improving human health, preempting illness, and feeding the world by improving the resiliency and sustainability of agriculture.

Flagship has been recognized twice on FORTUNE's "Change the World" list, an annual ranking of companies that have made a positive social and environmental impact through activities that are part of their core business strategies and has been twice named to Fast Company's annual list of the World's Most Innovative Companies.

THE ROLE

We are seeking a highly motivated Senior Research Associate to support the development and optimization of microbial fermentation processes for recombinant protein production. Reporting to the Principal Scientist, Bioprocess Development, this individual will play a key role in executing and scaling aerobic microbial fermentation workflows in a fast-paced startup environment.

The ideal candidate is highly hands-on, technically rigorous, and comfortable operating independently in a dynamic research setting. This role requires strong practical experience with bench-scale bioreactors, microbial culture techniques, fermentation analytics, and laboratory operations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Fermentation Operations

  • Operate, monitor, and troubleshoot bench-scale aerobic microbial fermentation systems with minimal supervision
  • Execute batch and fed-batch fermentation experiments to support process development objectives
  • Prepare media, inoculum, feeds, and process solutions for fermentation campaigns
  • Perform reactor setup, sterilization, calibration, and post-run cleaning/maintenance

Sampling & Analytical Support

  • Collect and process fermentation samples throughout cultivation runs
  • Perform routine analytical assays including OD measurements, metabolite analysis, and sample preparation for HPLC or related analytical platforms
  • Track fermentation performance metrics including biomass, substrate consumption, and product formation

Strain Evaluation & Process Development

  • Support screening and characterization of microbial strains in shake flask and bench scale bioreactors
  • Assist in process optimization studies, including media development and fermentation parameter evaluation
  • Maintain accurate and well-organized experimental records and documentation

Laboratory Operations

  • Generate and maintain microbial cell banks and inventory records
  • Coordinate ordering and tracking of fermentation consumables and raw materials
  • Support routine laboratory maintenance, equipment upkeep, and troubleshooting
  • Contribute to safe laboratory operations and maintain a strong culture of safety and operational rigor

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Collaborate with strain engineering, downstream, and analytical teams to support integrated process development activities
  • Assist with scaling workflows and implementing improved operational practices as the platform grows

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree (with 5-7 years of relevant research experience) or Master's degree (with 3-5 years of relevant research experience) in Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, Microbiology, Biotechnology, or related discipline.
  • Hands-on experience in microbial fermentation, microbiology, bioprocess development, or related laboratory environments
  • Experience in operating and maintaining bench-scale bioreactors
  • Strong understanding of aseptic technique and microbial culture handling
  • Experience with aerobic microbial fermentation workflows
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills
  • Ability to independently execute experiments and troubleshoot routine process issues

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with fed-batch fermentation processes
  • Familiarity with HPLC-based analysis of sugars, organic acids, or fermentation metabolites
  • Experience with recombinant protein expression systems
  • Experience supporting process optimization or scale-up activities
  • Familiarity with fermentation data analysis and process monitoring tools
