Job description

Job Description Summary
In this learning focused role, the Biomedical Technician Apprentice will respond to service calls to evaluate, diagnose, perform repair and planned maintenance (PM) on basic biomedical equipment and drive customer satisfaction through Service Excellence.
This is an onsite customer-facing service position focused on maintaining and repairing medical equipment in healthcare environments. Time is spent supporting customers in hospitals and clinical settings, serving as the face of GE HealthCare at customer sites in (South Bay, CA).
This one-year apprenticeship is designed to prepare candidates for a long-term career in field service. The apprenticeship will be scheduled to align with the anticipated availability of a Level 1 position to support continuity of employment following program completion.
Job Description
Role Responsibilities
  • Under supervision, evaluate basic customer biomedical equipment issues, implement appropriate repairs; as assigned, perform planned maintenance (PM), safety, environmental inspections and maintain effective customer relations. Follow appropriate GEHC policies, procedures, hospital protocol and complete necessary documentation, as guided.
  • Maintain daily communications with customers as directed, to ensure resolution and proper follow-up, leading to customer satisfaction. As instructed, implement GEHC/customer facility contract, supporting business goals and objectives.
  • May assist more experienced technicians on progressive repairs and resolution. Work as a member of local team to provide efficient service delivery to all accounts within assigned area.
  • Document all repair actions and submit reports/summaries according to schedule. Maintain approved parts inventory. Manage vendor's service delivery processes in compliance with GEHC policies, as instructed.
  • Ensure proper care of spares, tools and test equipment and ensure calibration. Enhance and maintain technical knowledge of current standards, codes, and procedures regarding safe and effective use of medical equipment formal instruction.
  • Meet Health and Human Services, as well as Environment Health and Safety requirements.
  • Complete all planned Quality and Compliance training within the defined deadlines. Identify and report all customer quality or compliance concerns immediately to the Quality Organization.
  • Aware of and comply with the GEHC Quality Manual, Quality Management System, Quality Management Policy, Quality Goals, and applicable laws and regulations as they apply to this job type/position.
  • Manage schedule, travel, tools, and learning activities with increasing independence over the course of the program while following established processes, safety requirements, and supervision guidelines.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, emotional intelligence, and resilience when working in high-pressure clinical environments, including situations where equipment issues may impact patient care.

Work Environment & Travel
  • Field roles are most effectively performed outside of GE HealthCare facilities and generally take place at customer locations, including hospitals and healthcare environments.
  • Healthcare operations run 24/7. Apprentices must be flexible to support customer needs, which may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, or adjusted hours based on service or customer requirements.
  • Travel to customer locations may be required, depending on market and business needs.

Required Qualifications
  • AS, BS degree, military education, certificate program, current student with less than 12 months from completion OR High School Diploma/GED with 6 months experience servicing electronic, IT or mechanical equipment.
  • Must have reliable transportation and a valid driver's license.
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. GE HealthCare does not sponsor employment vias for this role, both now and in the future.

Desired Qualifications
  • High school diploma/GED with demonstrated work experience, or a completed AS or BS degree strongly preferred.
  • Experience in customer facing role(s).
  • Experience interfacing both internal team members and external customers as part of a solution-based service process.
  • Knowledge of electronic digital circuitry and understanding of electronic and electro-mechanical devices.
  • Strong customer communication skills.
  • Change agent and process oriented.
  • Analytical and communication skills with the ability to communicate technical issues to the customer in an easy-to-understand manner.

Location & Mobility
  • Local candidates strongly preferred.
  • Any relocation beyond 30 miles from your current location must be approved by your manager in advance.

Program Considerations
  • Successful completion of the apprenticeship and conversion to a full-time internal position are based on performance, business need, and role availability.
  • Candidates who are open to relocation may increase their chances of placement into a full-time internal role.
  • In 2025, 84% of apprentices completing the program moved into full time internal positions.

Physical & Compliance Requirements
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment up to 35 pounds unassisted and perform frequent bending, stooping, twisting, climbing, crouching, kneeling, sitting, and standing for extended periods.
  • Ability to reach at, above, and below shoulder level; flex and extend neck; and demonstrate good hand and finger dexterity.
  • Specific vision abilities may include color vision, close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
  • Must successfully complete GE HealthCare background checks, post-offer drug testing, and ongoing customer access requirements, including required immunizations (obtaining and/or providing proof), additional drug tests/background checks (including a federal government background check if assigned to support a contract with the federal government), and site-specific compliance protocols.

The specific compensation offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including skills, qualifications, experience and location. In addition, this position may also be eligible to earn performance-based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long-term incentives (LTI).
