Job description


Position Summary
An Hourly LRAM Heavy Equipment Operator position is available at Schofield Barracks, HI with Colorado State University (CSU) and the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML). The position is located in Schofield Barracks, HI. Hourly positions cannot exceed 9 months, but opportunities for permanent positions may become available in the future. This position is contingent on continued project funding at Schofield Barracks. Remote work is not allowed for this position. The position will provide Land Rehabilitation and Maintenance (LRAM) support for US Army Garrison (USAG) Hawaii at Schofield Barracks. This position will operate heavy equipment, including, but not limited to dozers, skid steers, front-end loaders, vibratory compactors, forestry mowers/mulchers, excavators, backhoes, agricultural tractors, and heavy-duty trailers for the purpose of completing LRAM projects. Support will involve land rehabilitation, trail and training land maintenance and repairs, mowing/shredding vegetation, equipment maintenance, and soil stabilization on Army training lands. This position will also require operational maintenance and performing and documenting comprehensive pre-trip inspections on all heavy equipment, vehicles (e.g., dump trucks, pickup trucks, water trucks), and trailers.

Work Unit Description
Work will be on-site at Schofield Barracks and its associated sub-installations on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. Schofield Barracks is an 18,000-acre U.S. Army installation located 20 miles from Honolulu on the plateau or "central valley" of Oahu between the two volcanic mountain ranges that comprise the island. The installation is home to the U.S. Army Garrison, Hawaii.
Essential Job Duties
  • Operate heavy equipment, including, but not limited to dozers, skid steers, front-end loaders, vibratory compactors, forestry mowers/mulchers, excavators, backhoes, agricultural tractors, and heavy-duty trailers for the purpose of completing LRAM projects.
  • Perform maintenance and inspections of all equipment for operational readiness and safety.
  • Track and prepare weekly progress reports.

Conditions of Employment
  • Ability to work in-person at Schofield Barracks, HI.
  • Pre-employment Criminal Background Check (required for all new hires).
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license and meet CSU standards for driving throughout the course of employment.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds repeatedly without assistance. Physically able to work outdoors and perform strenuous labor under all hazardous working conditions (e.g., intense heat, cold, high humidity, noxious plants and animals).
  • Proficient verbal and written English communication skills.
  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by the proposed start date; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Supervision
Position will not supervise other employees.
Minimum Qualifications
  • A High School Diploma, General Education Development (GED), or equivalent.
  • A minimum of two (2) years' experience with running and maintaining heavy equipment, to include utilizing equipment such as bulldozers, dump trucks, excavators, front-end loaders/backhoes, skid steers, agricultural tractors, motor-graders, and light and heavy-duty trailers.
  • Ability to follow directions, work collectively with others as a team, and maintain safe working standards.
  • Experience performing operational, routine, and operator maintenance and inspections on all equipment to maintain operational readiness/safety and to keep machinery, equipment, and tools in good working condition.
  • Able to properly load, secure, and transport all heavy equipment with a range of trailers on both paved and dirt roads.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in a highly structured organization (e.g., military installation) and knowledge of Army Instructions, directives, guidance, and processes.
  • Experience with land rehabilitation, horizontal construction techniques, and erosion control
    practices specific to the State and/or EPA approved Best Management Practices (BMPs) required to
    achieve compliance with the Clean Water Act (CWA).
  • Experience running and maintaining heavy equipment such as: 10-to-25-ton dump trucks, dozers, motor graders, skid steers, front-end loaders, forestry mowers, excavators, agricultural tractors, and backhoes.

Salary Range
$28.00-$30.00 an hour
