POSITION: Digital Media Specialist, News & Music- Content Division
DEPARTMENT: Content

REPORTS TO: Director of Video Production, Content
PAY: $45,000- $55,000 (Commensurate with Experience)
SUMMARY: The Digital Media Specialist is a core member of the WXXI content team, responsible for translating our journalism into compelling digital storytelling that drives reach, relevance, and community engagement. This role produces and manages content across WXXI digital platforms to include WXXI.org, XXINews.org, the WXXI News app, newsletters, and social media platforms - ensuring that WXXI's content is accessible, timely, visually engaging, and aligned with our standards of editorial integrity.
This position also works on projects and content in conjunction with departments and staff across WXXI and CITY service areas, including Television, Education and Interactive Services, Information Technology and Engineering, Creative Services, Membership and Underwriting.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Edit, publish, and package news stories, audio segments, livestreams, and feature content for WXXINews.org, the WXXI News app and other platforms.
  • Produce engaging headlines, social posts, thumbnails, newsletters, push notifications, and visual assets.
  • Ensure stories are optimized for readability, clarity, SEO, accessibility, and platform best practices.

SOCIAL MEDIA & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
  • A major contributor to WXXI News social channels (Facebook, IG, X, TikTok, YouTube Community, LinkedIn).
  • Produce short-form video clips, audiograms, and visual explainers to accompany daily news coverage.
  • Monitor community conversations and support healthy, constructive dialogue in alignment with WXXI's editorial values.

VIDEO & AUDIO CLIP EDITING
  • Clip segments from radio broadcasts, talk shows (including Connections), and live reporting for digital and social.
  • Work with reporters and hosts to create platform-specific versions of interviews, series, and special coverage.
  • Support live video production for breaking news, special reporting, and community events when needed.

Live & Breaking News Support
  • Assist in digital coverage during breaking news with fast editorial judgement and accurate updates.
  • Coordinate real-time publishing across web, app, and social platforms.

Analytics & Audience Insights
  • Track digital performance across all platforms and provide weekly insight reports.
  • Identify opportunities to grow reach, repeat visitation, and engagement.
  • Suggest headline, timing, and format optimizations based on data.

Schedule & Work Environment
  • This role requires some evening or weekend coverage during breaking news and major community events.
