What is an auction manager?

Auction Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the planning, organization, and execution of auctions. Their duties typically include managing auction logistics, coordinating with sellers and buyers, setting up auction catalogs, handling marketing efforts, and ensuring all legal and financial procedures are followed. They may work for auction houses, online platforms, or manage specialized auctions for real estate, vehicles, art, or other goods. Strong organizational, communication, and negotiation skills are essential for this role.

How does an auction manager typically collaborate with other departments to ensure a successful auction event?

An Auction Manager works closely with various departments such as marketing, finance, operations, and customer service to coordinate all aspects of an auction. They collaborate with the marketing team to promote the event, liaise with finance to oversee payments and settlements, and work with operations to ensure auction items are properly catalogued and displayed. Regular communication and teamwork are essential to address challenges and ensure the auction runs smoothly from planning through execution. This cross-departmental collaboration not only helps prevent issues but also enhances the overall experience for both buyers and sellers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an auction manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Auction Manager, you need expertise in sales, inventory management, and event coordination, typically supported by experience in the auction or sales industry. Familiarity with auction software platforms, CRM systems, and online bidding tools is highly beneficial. Strong negotiation, organizational, and interpersonal skills help build client relationships and manage high-pressure events smoothly. These abilities are crucial for ensuring successful auctions, maximizing sales, and maintaining satisfied clients and bidders.

What is the difference between Auction Manager vs Auction Coordinator?

AspectAuction ManagerAuction Coordinator
CredentialsTypically requires experience in auction operations, sometimes certifications in auctioneering or related fieldsOften requires administrative or event planning experience, with fewer certification requirements
Work EnvironmentLeads the auction process, manages staff, and oversees the entire auction eventSupports the auction, handles logistics, and assists with event setup and coordination
Industry UsageCommonly employed in charity, art, real estate, and estate auctionsOften found in similar settings, focusing on supporting roles in auction events

The main difference between an Auction Manager and an Auction Coordinator is that the Auction Manager oversees the entire auction process, manages staff, and ensures the event runs smoothly, while the Auction Coordinator provides logistical support and assists with event setup. Both roles are essential in auction environments, but the Manager holds more responsibility for overall success.

What qualifications do you need to work as an auction manager?

Auction managers typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, with some roles preferring postsecondary education in business, marketing, or related fields. Experience in sales, customer service, or auction environments is valuable, and strong organizational, communication, and negotiation skills are essential. Certification is not mandatory but can enhance credibility and career prospects.

Job description

At Auction.com, we're transforming real estate. As the nation's leading online platform for buying and selling residential bank-owned and foreclosure properties, we connect buyers, sellers, and investors with innovative technology. With over $70 billion in assets, our success is driven by a culture of innovation, collaboration, and impact. We go beyond the bid-empowering our people to thrive and shape the future of the industry
Why Join Us?
This is a high-impact role with strong executive visibility, focused on one of the company's most important growth areas. You'll have the opportunity to shape core consumer experiences, influence go-to-market strategy, and collaborate with a talented cross-functional team - all while helping real people find the right real estate solutions.
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced and driven Senior Product Manager to co-lead strategy, development, and optimization of consumer-facing digital experiences. This role is central to driving engagement, accelerating buyer demand, and improving customer funnel performance across our marketplace.
You'll work cross-functionally with engineering, design, and marketing teams to build high-impact products that connect buyers with the right real estate opportunities - and help sellers maximize their outcomes.
The ideal candidate has a strong background in B2C product management, user behavior analysis, and growth experimentation. You should be energized by ambiguous challenges, structured in your thinking, and passionate about building great products that scale.
Key Responsibilities
Product Strategy & Execution
Own and evolve the product roadmap for B2C experience and engagement tools.
Identify and prioritize opportunities to improve activation, retention, and conversion across the consumer funnel.
Lead end-to-end product lifecycle: from discovery and validation through delivery and iteration.
Lead AI-driven initiatives to enhance and personalize key customer experiences.
Cross-functional Collaboration
Partner closely with engineers, designers, and marketers to build and launch effective solutions.
Translate customer needs and market insights into clear product requirements.
Align stakeholders across business, design, data, and engineering to drive unified product delivery.
Consumer Insights & Funnel Optimization
Use quantitative and qualitative data to understand buyer behavior and uncover growth opportunities.
Define and analyze KPIs across the funnel - such as traffic-to-lead, engagement rate, and conversion.
Champion experimentation and A/B testing to improve user journeys and engagement strategies.
Demand Generation & Go-to-Market Alignment
Collaborate with marketing on customer acquisition, lead nurturing, and multi-channel communication initiatives.
Ensure seamless handoff and integration between marketing campaigns and product experiences.
Platform & Feature Development
Work closely with technical teams to improve platform capabilities that support flexible, scalable growth solutions.
Leverage customer feedback and behavioral data to inform product iterations and roadmap decisions.
Qualifications
5+ years of experience in product management, ideally in a high-growth B2C or consumer tech environment.
Proven success leading customer-facing product initiatives focused on engagement, acquisition, or retention.
Strong analytical mindset with experience using data to make product decisions (e.g., SQL, Amplitude, or similar).
Excellent communication and collaboration skills - comfortable working across teams and presenting to leadership.
Experience with growth loops, funnel design, and behavioral experimentation is highly desirable.
Familiarity with Agile processes and modern product development practices.
Real estate or marketplace experience is a plus.
Preferred Skills
Experience in consumer growth, mobile engagement, or conversion optimization.
Understanding of design thinking, user testing, and lifecycle marketing tools.
Familiarity with cross-channel customer experience (email, SMS, push, etc.).
The good faith base salary [or wage] range for this role at the time of posting and hire is $170,000.00 to $200,000.00 per year. Actual compensation offered will be determined based on a number of factors, including but not limited to a candidate's qualifications, skills, competencies, experience, and geographic location.
In addition to base salary, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus.
Auction.com also offers a comprehensive benefits package for eligible employees, including (but not limited to):
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Auction.com contributes an amount equal to 25% of your eligible contributions in our 401k plan.
  • Paid Time Off (PTO), including 12 paid holidays.

The availability and value of benefits may vary and are subject to the terms and conditions of the applicable plan documents.
The Company reserves the right to modify compensation and benefits programs at any time, consistent with applicable law.
