As an Associate Manufacturing Engineer, one of the main challenges is balancing the need for efficiency improvements with maintaining product quality and safety standards. You may encounter resistance to change from production teams who are accustomed to existing processes, requiring strong communication and collaboration skills. Additionally, troubleshooting equipment or workflow issues often demands quick, analytical thinking and adaptability, especially when working under tight production deadlines. Overcoming these challenges offers valuable opportunities to develop problem-solving abilities and gain hands-on experience with lean manufacturing principles.

What is the difference between Associate Manufacturing Engineer vs Manufacturing Engineer?

AspectAssociate Manufacturing EngineerManufacturing Engineer

Associate Manufacturing Engineers typically support and assist in manufacturing processes, while Manufacturing Engineers take on more independent roles in designing and improving production systems. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and are common in manufacturing industries.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

While most associate manufacturing engineers do not earn this level of salary, senior or specialized engineers with extensive experience, advanced skills, and leadership roles in high-demand industries can reach or exceed $500,000 annually, often including bonuses and stock options. Such compensation is typically associated with executive-level positions or highly specialized roles in large corporations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Associate Manufacturing Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Manufacturing Engineer, you need a solid background in engineering principles, process improvement, and manufacturing methodologies, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software, Lean Manufacturing tools, and quality management systems (such as Six Sigma) is often required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and attention to detail are valuable soft skills in this role. These abilities ensure efficient production processes, high product quality, and successful collaboration with cross-functional teams.

Is 40 too late to be an engineer?

Associate Manufacturing Engineers and other engineering roles often value skills, experience, and continuous learning over age. Many engineers start or transition into the field later in life, and acquiring relevant certifications or technical skills can help facilitate entry at any age.

What does an associate manufacturing engineer do?

An associate manufacturing engineer supports the design, development, and improvement of manufacturing processes to ensure efficient production. They analyze production data, assist in implementing new equipment or procedures, and often use tools like CAD software and lean manufacturing principles. This role typically requires technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and knowledge of manufacturing standards.

Job description

WHO WE ARE:

At Harvey Performance Company, we're more than a team; we're a community. Our thriving, dynamic, and rapidly expanding organization values community, celebrates success, and fosters personal and professional growth opportunities.

THE OPPORTUNITY:

We're adding a Manufacturing Engineer at our Cuyahoga Falls site to support a growing pipeline of engineering work. There are a number of active and planned projects in place, ranging from process improvements to shop layout and equipment changes. This role will support that work alongside our team and the broader Harvey engineering network. You'll spend significant time on the floor learning the operation, then take on more project responsibility as you develop. This is a strong opportunity for an early-career engineer who wants to grow into a site-level role.

IN THIS ROLE, YOU WILL:

  • Support process improvement initiatives focused on cycle time, setup reduction, and machine utilization
  • Handle AutoCAD work including drawings, tool documentation, and shop floor layout projects
  • Work alongside maintenance, CNC, Braze, post-production, and QA on cross-functional projects
  • Support projects from kickoff through completion, with guidance from engineering peers
  • Build and update SOPs, work instructions, and process documentation
  • Help investigate quality issues, participate in root cause analysis, and support corrective actions
  • Collaborate with engineering peers across the broader Harvey network
  • Help train operators and supervisors on new processes and workflow changes
  • Support continuous improvement work including SMED, cycle time reduction, and uptime initiatives

YOU'LL BRING:

  • Some manufacturing or production experience (internships, co-ops, or 1+ year on the job all count)
  • Working or developing AutoCAD proficiency
  • Exposure to CNC machining or similar manufacturing processes, with interest in how things run on the floor
  • A self-starter mindset and willingness to take work and push it forward
  • Comfort working both on the floor and at a desk
  • Clear, direct communication that works for operators, supervisors, and non-technical leaders

NICE TO HAVE:

  • Bachelor's degree in Manufacturing, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering
  • Experience in cutting tools, grinding, or precision manufacturing
  • Six Sigma, Lean, or DMAIC exposure
  • Plant layout or facilities planning experience
  • SolidWorks proficiency in addition to AutoCAD
  • ERP system experience

WHERE YOU'LL WORK:

You'll be based at our Cuyahoga Falls, OH site, a precision cutting tool manufacturing operation in Northeast Ohio. The environment is clean, the team is experienced, and the work spans CNC grinding, brazing, and post-production. Expect to split your time between the shop floor and your desk, with heavier floor presence early on as you learn the operation.

Target salary for this role is $75,000, with final compensation based on experience, qualifications, and fit. Harvey Performance Company offers a competitive benefits package including health, dental, and vision coverage, 401(k), and paid time off.
