Trim Engineer information

What is a trim engineer?

Trim Engineers are professionals in the automotive or aerospace industries who specialize in designing, developing, and overseeing the installation of interior and exterior trim components of vehicles or aircraft. Their responsibilities include selecting materials, ensuring proper fit and finish, and collaborating with other engineering teams to meet safety, aesthetic, and functional standards. They play a key role in enhancing customer comfort, vehicle ergonomics, and overall product quality.

What are some common challenges faced by trim engineers during the vehicle development process?

Trim Engineers often encounter challenges such as balancing design aesthetics with manufacturability and cost targets, ensuring material durability, and meeting stringent safety and comfort standards. Coordinating closely with design, manufacturing, and quality teams is essential, especially when integrating new materials or features into interiors. Additionally, managing supplier timelines and navigating changes in project specifications can require strong project management and communication skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a trim engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Trim Engineer, you need expertise in automotive design, materials engineering, and manufacturing processes, often supported by a degree in mechanical or automotive engineering. Familiarity with CAD software (such as CATIA or Siemens NX), PLM systems, and industry-specific quality standards is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication help you excel in cross-functional teams and manage complex design iterations. These skills ensure the development of high-quality, functional, and aesthetically pleasing interior and exterior vehicle components that meet safety and cost requirements.

What is the difference between Trim Engineer vs Structural Engineer?

AspectTrim EngineerStructural Engineer
Primary FocusDesign and installation of interior and exterior trim componentsDesign and analysis of building structures like beams, columns, and frameworks
Required CredentialsTypically requires a degree in civil or mechanical engineering, certifications in construction or carpentryRequires a degree in civil or structural engineering, PE license often preferred
Work EnvironmentConstruction sites, manufacturing plants, interior design projectsArchitectural firms, construction sites, engineering consulting
Industry UsageConstruction, carpentry, interior finishingConstruction, infrastructure, building design

While both roles are involved in construction projects, a Trim Engineer specializes in trim components and finishing details, whereas a Structural Engineer focuses on the integrity and safety of building frameworks. Understanding these differences helps in selecting the right professional for specific project needs.

New Product Launch Engineer

American Trim

Sidney, OH

Full-time

Posted 12 days ago

Job description

Job Summary:

This is an entry-level engineering role within the New Product Launch department, designed to build the skills needed for a long-term career in new product launches. You'll start by supporting a mix of continuous improvement (CIP), quality projects, and smaller APQP B program changes. The goal is to gain experience through a variety of hands-on projects after progressing into larger program launches, process engineering, quoting, or future plant leadership opportunities.

In this role, you'll coordinate and drive the implementation of assigned APQP B (program change) projects after the change order is released by the New Product Launch Manager. While these projects are generally smaller in size, there will be many happening at once, each with its own scope and challenges. This provides the opportunity to learn American Trim Sidney's manufacturing processes, ERP systems, and cross-functional operations while working under the guidance of experienced team members.

Success in this role requires someone who enjoys staying organized, managing multiple priorities, and working with people across engineering, production, quality, purchasing, and other departments. It's common to have 10–20 active projects at any given time, making strong communication and follow-through essential.

During the first year, you'll also lead or participate in several plant continuous improvement and quality corrective action projects. These assignments are intended to build technical knowledge, develop relationships throughout the plant, and provide a solid understanding of the processes that are critical to long-term success in New Product Launch.

As your training progresses, you'll begin learning American Trim's product costing process with the goal of becoming a backup resource for new program cost estimating and eventually serving as an independent reviewer of cost models during the business award process.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Manage Initiation and implementation of new APQP B Projects after Change PO as assigned by NPL Manager.
  • Capably lead multiple smaller APQP Type B new program launches for the Sidney Operation.
  • Show aptitude and progressively learn aspects of American Trim’s processes and related factory cost modeling through progressive developmental assignments.
  • Perform other job related duties as assigned.

Qualified candidates must be legally authorized on an unrestricted basis (US Citizen, Legal Permanent Resident, Refugee or Asylee) to be employed in the United States. American Trim does not anticipate providing employment related work sponsorship for this position (e.g., H-18 status).
