Job description

ABOUT THE JOB

This role is responsible for providing technical support and expertise to our CNC machining operations. You will collaborate with production team, quality, vendors, and customers to optimize current machining processes, troubleshoot issues, and develop new machining applications. You will be a key player in driving continuous improvement and helping drive safety, quality, delivery and productivity goals.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate with operations to provide ownership and leadership in CAD/CAM, CNC program management including standard operating procedures (generation, storage, optimization, etc).
  • Provide expert level troubleshooting and support for CNC machining processes when needed.
  • Analyze machine performance data and identify areas with team for improvement. Optimize toolpaths and cutting parameters for efficient and high-quality machining
  • Assist with a hands on approach as setting up and optimizing new CNC programs and processes where applicable (programming).
  • Provide support for process routings in ERP – support new part setup and existing part maintenance where needed. Provide support for work in process drawings and work instructions.
  • Provide cost estimating support to Sales Team.
  • Develop new CAD/CAM, Multi Axis Milling, Millturn, Swissturns, and 5 Axis Grinding, CNC machining and auxiliary applications and processes – new process development and in support of select new part introduction (NPI) projects.
  • Work with customer teams on assigned NPI projects to translate design requirements into feasible machining configurations and DFM support.
  • Research and implement new technologies and best practices in CNC machining and supporting processes in collaboration with team. Support development of Manufacturing Technology Roadmap.
  • Create and maintain standard operating procedures for CNC operations and auxiliary processes including ensuring process routings and setup information is well documented and clear.
  • Guide, train & mentor Technicians and Programmers on Projects.
  • Support capital equipment deployment including collaboration with vendors and internal teams to ensure timely and proficient deployment of projects.
  • Analyze production data and identify opportunities for cost reduction and cycle time improvement.
  • Develop and implement lean manufacturing principles including 5S and changeover reduction support. Provide next generation fixture and tooling designs with team for process optimization. Serve as a Subject matter expert to maintenance team support and knowledge for CNC equipment.
  • With staff, train and mentor personnel on CNC machining and programming best practices including training development, documentation, and delivery.
  • Identify areas of potential implementation of automation and lights out production to aid productivity and throughput.
  • Stay up-to-date on the latest advancements in CNC technology and automation via research and online forums.
  • Ability to support multi sites as needed.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's or Associate degree in engineering field is a requirement.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience with Bachelors or 6 years with Associate Degree in CNC machining operations (Multi Axis milling, turning, Swissturns, grinding a plus, EDM additional plusses), with proven experience in programming and process optimization.
  • Considerations can be made for candidates have Trade School with 12 years of experience in CNC machining, CAD/CAM and Continuous Improvement.
  • Hands on capability required – ability to do hands on development including machine setup is optimal in this role. Should be able to effectively prove out new processes or work with team closely to get new parts and processes setup and running smoothly.
  • Experience with CAD/CAM software and CNC simulation tools needed. Solidworks and MasterCAM or Siemens NX preferred.
  • Tooling and fixturing design experience needed.
  • Experience with automation and robotics is a major plus.
  • Strong understanding of CNC programming (Fanuc based controls) as well as blueprint reading and GD&T.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot and solve complex technical problems including customer or end user interface.
  • Elevated communication and interpersonal skills.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

This job operates in both an office environment and a manufacturing environment. The role routinely uses standard office equipment, such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. The individual will be required to adhere to safety policies and procedures on the manufacturing floor.

PHYSICAL DEMAND:

Limited physical demand may be needed. Physical demands will involve standing, walking, and occasionally moving or lifting material.

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK:

This is a full-time position, with business core hours of Monday through Friday 8am to 5pm. As an exempt employee, you will be required to work additional hours to support business demands.

TRAVEL:

Occasional overseas and domestic travel may be required to support the rapid growth of the company.
