Riverside Research is an independent National Security Nonprofit dedicated to research and development in the national interest. We provide high-end technical services, research and development, and prototype solutions to some of the country’s most challenging technical problems. Position Overview

Riverside Research is seeking a highly skilled and innovative Senior Material Research Scientist to join our dynamic team. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the research, development, and characterization of advanced composite materials for various applications. This role involves working closely with cross-functional teams to drive material innovation and ensure the successful implementation of composite materials.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the technical direction with government and team, and mentor junior/mid-level staff.
  • Research, assess and characterize performance of advanced composite materials for aerospace systems.
  • Develop frameworks and procedures to test, characterize and model composite behavior in relevant environments.
  • Test samples under extreme conditions such as: high temperatures, chemical exposures in active or inert environments, radiation, plasmas as well as hypersonic conditions.
  • Perform material characterization using techniques such as spectroscopy, microscopy, mechanical testing, and thermal analysis.
  • Provide both in-situ and ex-situ experimental measurements of composites, ceramics and structural materials.
  • Perform failure analysis using non-destructive evaluation techniques.
  • Analyze data and interpret results to guide the development of new materials.
  • Prepare technical reports, presentations, and publication to communicate research findings.
  • Collaborate with engineers, research scientist, data scientist and AI/ML scientist to integrate composite material into new and existing systems.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in physics, mechanical engineering, structural engineering, materials engineering, chemistry, biochemistry, or a related field with a focus on composite materialwith 8 years of experience or 6 years with MS or 3 years with PhD.
  • Active Top Secret security clearance.
  • 5+ years of experience in research and development of advanced composite materials.
  • Proven experience leading a technical project and team.
  • Proficiency in techniques such as SEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR, DSC, and TGA.
  • Familiarity with computational modeling and simulation tools for composite materials: COMSOL, ABAQUS.

$130,000-$220,000 This represents the typical compensation range for this position based on experience, location and other factors.
