Job description

DESCRIPTION

Under the direction of Urologic Surgeons, the Sr. Physician Assistant (PA) provides clinically expert patient care in the support of the Urology Service. The PA will manage post-operative and surveillance patients, particularly those with metabolic stone disease, provide comprehensive dietary, behavioral, and pharmacologic management, provide acute access for patients actively passing stones who require timely surgical evaluation, perform procedures such as cystoscopy with stent removals and diagnostic cystoscopy, and evaluate and manage general urology patients in the clinic setting.

Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to, patient evaluations, history and physical exams, development and execution of treatment plans, patient care coordination with nursing staff, and discharge planning, management of patient health issues, prioritizing and resolving issues, escalating to physicians as appropriate. Manage and document all communications in the electronic medical record system. The position requires a strong emphasis on the complete care of the surgical patient and demonstrates excellent communication skills, involving physicians, the resident team, nursing staff, family, and all other relevant team members to provide comprehensive care. Additional duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must be a graduate from a physician assistant program approved by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA).

  • California Physician Assistant (PA) license.

  • Current PA Certification from NCCPA.

  • A minimum of one (1+) year of urology outpatient experience as a PA.

  • Knowledge of common urologic problems and treatments.

  • Theoretical background in anatomy, physiology, general medicine, pulmonary, emergency, and critical care medicine, management of common diseases, concepts of medicine and surgery, therapeutics, including pharmacology, counseling techniques, and interpersonal dynamics.

  • Working knowledge of medical terminology.

  • Skill in telephone interviewing of patients to efficiently retrieve accurate information.

  • Ability to perform initial history and physical examination, identify major medical problems, and formulate appropriate plans of action.

  • Writing skills to prepare clear medical reports, laboratory data, and progress notes, as well as policies, procedures, and protocols for patient care management.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients and other health care personnel, and skill at providing clear written, verbal, and telephone communication with a wide variety of people.

  • Ability to assess the daily status and progress of patients and report this effectively to the physician and other medical care personnel associated with the patient.

  • Ability to maintain good working relationships and communications with physicians in-charge, laboratory personnel, and members of the health care team.

  • Knowledge of medical ethics and law practices, pertaining to medical and medical socioeconomics

  • Knowledge necessary for instructing housestaff, medical students, physicians, nurses, and other medical personnel in all aspects of acute and chronic care.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Three (3+) or more years of urology outpatient experience as a PA.

  • Two (2+) or more years of endourology outpatient experience.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Must be able to work various hours and locations based on business needs. The primary work location is UC San Diego Health - Genesee Avenue.

  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check and pre-employment physical.

  • Must be able to obtain UCSD Medical Staff privileges and maintain during employment. Due to advanced practice credentialing eligibility, clinical advanced practice experience must be within the last two years gained through school or work experience.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $162,530 - $214,104 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $77.84 - $102.54

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
