Job description

ChenMoore is seeking a detail-oriented and proactive Project Accountant to support the financial success of our civil engineering projects. This role partners closely with Project Managers (PMs) to oversee project setup, budgeting, billing, and financial reporting throughout the project lifecycle.

The ideal candidate thrives in a project-based environment and plays a key role in delivering accurate, timely financial information that drives profitability, cash flow, and informed business decisions.

Responsibilities

Project Financial Management

  • Set up new projects in the ERP system, including contract values, billing terms, revenue methods, and budgets
  • Monitor project performance, including labor, expenses, consultant costs, and profitability
  • Analyze budget vs. actual performance and earned revenue
  • Collaborate with Project Managers to maintain accurate budgets and forecasts
  • Ensure proper project coding and cost allocation

Billing & Revenue Recognition

  • Prepare and process client invoices (time & materials, lump sum, and unit-based billing)
  • Manage progress billing and percentage-of-completion calculations
  • Review unbilled labor, expenses, and WIP to ensure timely invoicing
  • Apply appropriate revenue recognition methods (WIP-based, percent complete, milestone-based)
  • Ensure billing aligns with contract terms and client requirements
  • Support retainage tracking and billing

Accounts Receivable Support

  • Monitor accounts receivable and assist with collections
  • Review aging reports and escalate issues when necessary
  • Partner with Project Managers to support collection strategies

Required Qualifications

  • 3-7 years of relevant experience in a project-based accounting environment
  • Experience in civil engineering, architecture, or professional services preferred
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Project accounting principles
    • Billing methods (percent complete, time & expense, not-to-exceed, etc.)
    • Job costing and budgeting
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience is preferred over a degree, but degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field is welcome
  • Experience with Deltek Vantagepoint, Deltek Vision, Deltek Ajera, or similar ERP systems
