Job description

Lead Architectural CAD Design Engineer
Coburn's Exclusive is looking for an Architectural CAD Design/Modeler to lead our team of drafters. Requirements:
  • Degree in Architecture, Engineering, or related field
  • 3-5 years of 3D AutoCAD experience
  • Autodesk Inventor drafting and drawing experience
  • Experience with spreadsheets including Excel and Google Sheets
  • 1 year of experience leading a team of 3-5 people

Leadership & Management Duties
  • Team Leadership & Production: Lead a team of 3-8 drafters while personally producing drawings for projects as required. Maintain the expected division of 40% leadership and 60% production, adjusting based on production demands and overall departmental needs.1
  • Workflow Management & Project Assignment: Collaborate with the Project Management team to assign projects and schedule the department's workflow using the existing Gantt Chart.1
  • Departmental Oversight & Reporting:Ensure all project deadlines are met and provide the Project Management team with progress updates at least weekly, and Lead Daily morning huddles with CAD team to ensure they have what they need and are staying on pace.1
  • Client and Structural Coordination:Work closely with Project Management for external communication regarding drafting. This includes communicating with clients about their specific drafting needs and coordinating with structural engineers to provide necessary information for project evaluation.
  • Efficiency and Protocol Development:Drive continuous improvement to increase the efficiency and accuracy of the existing CAD department. Work with ownership and the General Manager (GM) to establish and enforce a consistent drafting protocol.
  • Training and Development: Train new drafters to follow established protocol. Work with the drafting team to proactively identify the training needs of every team member and ensure that all necessary training is scheduled and completed.
  • Performance Evaluation: Conduct evaluations of all Drafting personnel, in conjunction with the CFO/HR, on an as-needed basis to ensure the department is operating at optimum efficiency.
  • Resource Communication: Clearly communicate all supply, material, and equipment requirements to the General Manager.

Technical & Production Duties
  • Drawing Production: Create architectural drawings of custom metal structures. This includes moving drawings through all stages of the design process, such as:1
    • Interpreting customer drawings and blueprints.1
    • Taking measurements using tools (calipers, laser scanners, etc.).1
    • Translating information into fabrication drawings for customer review.1
    • Editing drawings as needed for final customer approval and release to the fabrication department, while maintaining time constraints and quality standards.
  • Data Processing and Utilization:Process all 3D scans and ensure all drafting department members are trained to effectively utilize these scans in their workflow.1
  • On-Site Data Collection: When necessary, travel to job sites to collect appropriate 3D scans.
  • Technical Proficiency: Maintain an advanced level of proficiency in reading, interpreting, and creating diagrams, sketches, and blueprints.

Software Expertise: Utilize and maintain expert-level competency in all of Coburn's current Drafting Programs, including but not limited to Autodesk Inventor, ReCap, and AutoCad 2026, and other basic office software.This position requires an authorization to work within the United States and a valid drivers license accompanied by a reliable mode of transportation to and from work (including jobs that are not located at our shop).
